The service has been disappointing on the last few visits. On busy Friday and Saturday nights there are not enough wait or bus staff to service every table. Food is still tasty. Not happy with the smaller sushi rolls with less tobiko or warm teriyaki chicken. I went here for dinner a few nights ago and fell in love with the Rainbow Roll. It came with an assortment of fish on top of a California Roll. However, I just read some reviews and found out you can have REAL CRAB for $1 more by ordering the 'crab roll' instead. If I had known that the roll would have been even better. But it was great how it was. I can't wait to go back!! BTW I tried to Redwood City roll, I felt obligated since I live here, and it was SO GOOD. It may look intimidating but it tastes great!

Been there for both dinner and lunch. Not the freshest fish - Husband had the Chirashi and a couple of the fish were frozen. The cooked items are just OK. Portions for the lunch bento box are smaller than most other places. Overall, I think there are better Japanese restaurants in the area.

We really enjoyed this place and will definitely go back. The fish was high quality, the service was extremely friendly, and they had a great selection of beers and sakes. But what really sets this place apart is the menu. In addition to all the standard sushi fare, there is also a decent selection of other Japanese items, and the most creative list of rolls in the area. Many of their roles use a special crab mayo sauce, which I really enjoyed. I look forward to going back and trying more of this awesome menu.

This is my second favorite sushi place. The rolls are huge and gorgeous and they taste fresh and delicious. The calamari appetizer is absolutely delicious. Service is good and prices are ok, a tad pricey but overall a great place.

Good stuff at a steep price--like, 6pc sashimi assortment for $16.50. You can get twice as much sashimi for the money down Broadway at Yokayama, and in my opinion the sashimi cuts at Yokayama are a bit fresher and tastier. Also they cut 'em real thick at Suisha house, like 3/8" thick, which makes for a chewy little raw-fish steak; I prefer the thinner, melt-in-your-mouth slices at Yokayama. The texture at Suisha house also made me suspect that their fish had been frozen and thawed, which tends to make it a little mealy. Nevertheless, this would be a 4-star place if it weren't quite so pricey. Due to its great location downtown, Suisha is often crowded. At dinner time, you will enjoy a much more spacious, quieter scene at Yokayama a few blocks away (Broadway / Maple).

Great sushi gem in downtown Redwood City. My friends have been raving and wanting to take me here for a long time. Great large space with lots of specials written on chalk boards. I am a big fan of places that serve their edamame hot...so big kudos to that. Below are the items that I remember ordering. All delicious and leaving you wanting more ! I have been here twice. And both times, I have been teleported to a place where my dreams and hunger are met with the satisfaction of my diabolical taste buds. What does that mean? It was good. I usually order rolls with the coolest names -- like the, "Cassidy Roll" or the "Michelle Roll." I don't know how these people get to have sushi named after them but I am hoping Suisha House will name something after me for this Yelp Review. Please call my roll the "Tony B. Badass Roll." And if you were to make this roll, make it a White Tiger Roll with scallops! But anyways, when I receive the rolls, I ask myself, "Why are these rolls so small?" After I inhale about 1.5 rolls, I then say to myself, "Crap, I ordered too much." Even though the maki rolls look really small and beautiful, they are delicious and filling. I usually eat here at lunch and drink sake with my dates. I just wished my dates weren't my male co-workers. I really got to meet some hot girls in Redwood City. Sad face. :(

We came here for lunch one day, and the food was quite good. The lunch combo was pretty filling, and the katsu and fried oysters were both done well. The sashimi was slightly disappointing, but the salmon was quite good, and given that salmon is my favorite, that worked out okay. The restaurant itself has nice decor. Good sushi. The salmon and tuna were particularly good. Service started out fine but got neglectful. My sister and walked in at around 6:15 or 6:30 pm on a Friday. The tables were maybe 1/3 full and the sushi bar only had 2 people sitting there, so I can't blame the bad service on being too crowded. The sushi chef lost or forgot to put in my order for hamachi kama and did not do anything to acknowledge, apologize nor make up for it. When I asked about the hamachi kama, the sushi chef replied that it usually takes about 20 minutes and he would check. He asked me if I still wanted it if it would be another 20 minutes and I said "no, we'll just get something else". We had finished our sushi, water and drinks and just sat there waiting. Eventually I said to the sushi chef that if the kama was coming that's great but if it's going to be much longer could we cancel out order. He said something to one of the waiters and the next thing I knew, out check was being handed to us. We got an order of Chirashi, a spicy hamachi maki and a Harvard roll. a glass of of lychee flavored sake for a total of $39. We woulda ordered more if only we coulda.

This place is awesome--fish quality can't be beat, and it's always fresh because it's consistently packed! Huge roll selection--my favorite is the Anastasia, which is basically a roll made completely out of sashimi! You may have to wait a bit for a table, especially cause the place is on the small side, but it's worth it. I've been here multiple times, and the staff has always been super nice. We recently had a party for my boyfriend & two of our friends who all have the same birthday here, resulting in a 20 person table, and they were wonderful! We felt bad taking up literally half the restaurant, but fortunately it was a weeknight and everyone was spending like mad. Love Suisha House!!!

My BF and I found this place one night while walking through the main streets of downtown Redwood City near the movie theater (a whole 2 or 3 blocks...haha) looking for a new place to dine when we were new to the area. Since this restaurant had quite a number of patrons in comparison to the other restaurants around, we decided to give it a try. I really liked the decor when I walked in, a pretty modernized Japanese restaurant with a red, black, and brown color scheme. However you can tell the place is getting a little worn. They have a couple flat screen TVs that showcase their various rolls which we were intrigued by and soon commented "Oh what's that"..."Let's try that" ...."Oh that looks good." We were pretty impressed with their large selection of speciality sushi rolls and the uniqueness of some of their rolls. We ordered several different rolls. Some I really liked and some I didn't care for too much (because of the raw fish)....but keep in mind this is coming from a girl that doesn't really care for sashimi. But overall there were a couple rolls that made us want to come back. Our favorite specialty sushi rolls are: 1.) The Lion King Roll (because we liked that it is baked and warm) 2.) The Yeffer Roll (it has Jufran sauce on it which makes an interesting taste... kinda sweet....something we've never seen at any other Japanese restaurant) 3.) Any of the rolls labeled with "crunchy"....rolls with tempura-like flakes drizzled all over....yummy The service has usually been prompt when we've gone here so it makes dining here quick. However it is kinda pricey for sushi. Usually around $40 for 4 speciality rolls.... We have probably been here at least 5-6 times in the past year because we are too lazy to drive anywhere more than 5 minutes away. So it's become one of our "Go to" places. It's definitely a cool place to come if your craving sushi and want to stay local. I don't think I'd drive out of my way to go here, but I would definitely give this place a shot if you do live in the area or happen to be in the area. 4 stars - for the pretty yummy sushi 3 stars - for the prices 3.5 stars - for the service 3.5 stars rounded up.....

If you eat here alone- NO ORANGE FOR YOU!! I walked over from the train station because I was starving, I didn't feel like cooking and my usual dinner partner was staying late at work. I ordered the cat's eye roll, hamachi nigiri and edamame. The food tasted okay but for the prices you would think the rice wouldn't be mushy and the hamachi wouldn't have a large piece of connective tissue that you have to pull out of you mouth mid-chew. Gross! I was too hungry to care but when paid for my meal and did not get the cut up orange that all the group diners were getting I was irritated. No orange makes me feel more alone. I might come here again with someone else to try the rolls...then again maybe not.

There are three types of sushi places in the Bay Area. There are bad sushi restaurants, authentic Japanese style sushi restaurants, and Americanized sushi restaurants with rolls and crazy sauces. Suisha House is definitely the latter. I came on a Friday night after work. They opened three minutes late (I know, who cares.... but i was hungry!). The atmosphere is pretty upscale and nice. It would be a nice date place. I sat at the sushi bar and the chef took my order directly. In general, the service was very good but the restaurant was relatively empty. I had the momo roll (spicy scallops, cucumber, hamachi, wasabi tobiko, spicy mayo sauce, it had way too much sauce...I could not tell what meat was inside the roll), the Rad Ratto roll (spicy crab mayo, unagi, cucumber, tuna, salmon, & tai, it was the best roll I had), and the Lion King roll (California roll oven baked with salmon and creamy sauce , this thing was crazy, I have never had an oven baked sushi anything). I also had the Nigori sake (I love how inexpensive sake is and how well it gets the job done). I will definitely go back, although I definitely don't think Suisha House qualifies as a "real" japanese sushi restaurant. Pardon my racist comment, but ...... "its a good place to take white people".

Suisha is one of my mid-Peninsula sushi restaurant rotation and have been here a few times. Normally sit at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs are friendly. Thus, I've had good service experience unlike some of the other commentators. However, it always takes my asking to remove plates from the table from the waiters; otherwise they don't voluntarily come. The sushi quality is better than average - would rate it a 4. The quality of the nabeyaki udon is also very good. That's why Suisha is part of our rotation. Waiter service is below average. Sitting at the sushi bar is the way to go and there's always open seats and the sushi chefs are nice. The reason this only gets a 3 stars is that pricing is slightly overpriced. I always leave satisfied with the food experience, but when the bill comes, it's always a bit higher than what I'm used to. Will still come here every once in a while and can recommend, but be prepared to pay a bit higher than average for sushi.

I've been coming here since it opened (I've probably eaten here close to ten times), and it never disappoints. The fish is fresh, the rolls are creative, the prices are good ($6 to $12 for a roll of 6 or 8 pieces), and the service is attentive. After your meal, they bring you a little hut made out of an orange; it's a fun, free dessert that is very refreshing after a sushi dinner. Not much more to say about this place...I've had a great sushi experience every time I've been here, and I will be coming back for as long as they remain in business.

I didn't have time to have lunch - and my hungry monster was starting to make noise. It wanted food now! So, we parked the car on Broadway thinking we were going to have Mexican for lunch...but as I looked down the street, I spied a restaurant that served my favorite food - SUSHI! As we entered the restaurant, noticed the soothing decor of Suisha House. Since we arrived after the lunch crowd, we were told to sit where we wanted. We chose to sit towards the front window that had a wonderful view of the Broadway section of downtown Redwood City. We were serenaded with the sound of water trickling in the fountain. In scanning their lunch menu, the prices were very reasonable. I ordered the oyako donburi that came with salad and miso soup. I agree with Lolia that the miso was a bit on the salty side and not much tofu. I was equally unimpressed with the salad - just pieces of iceberg lettuce with dressing - meh. The chicken in the donburi (mostly thigh meat) was tender, but there was not much egg. It was ok, but I was hungry and still had to tame that hungry monster! S ordered the teriyaki beef salad - something unique that we have not seen in other Japanese restaurants. The beef was cooked medium rare with strips of fried wontons. The dressing, although very rich, was very yummy. Kinda makes me wish I ordered this too! The best part of our meal was the Anastasia roll. The sashimi roll was three types of fish rolled up in tuna with poki sauce . OH YUM! ~ My hungry monster is happy! This roll deserves a star all by itself. The service was prompt and courteous. I'm looking forward coming back to try more sushi rolls, but I'll probably stay away from the donburi dishes in the future.

I have been going here for a few years and have watched the menu pleasently evolve. The food has always been pretty good and consistent. The service, however, is another story. On numerous occaisions my friends have orderd the 2 item combo with terriyaki chicken and beef. Each time, the order has come out stone cold. Also, the last time I was there, my party was one of the last on a Saturday night. We had order a number of differner rolls, saki and beers, but had not received them all throughout our meal. The wait staff were unattentive and delivering the bill was slow as molasses. When the bill finally came, we found we had been charged for all the items that never made it to our table- about $18 worth. This is not cool and the tip certainly reflected that. I do have to say sushi is fresh and delicious- Anastasia roll is amazing...... Too bad the service pretty much sucks.

Let me start by saying I am NOT a sushi traditionalist. I like inventive, strange rolls, flash frying, and yes, even mayonnaise. I know, the horror. But please keep this in mind and if you are anything like me, read on. Suisha House is my favorite sushi place. There, I said it. FAVORITE! I have been there many, many times and have never been disappointed with anything, including the service. Even when it's really busy I never felt neglected. I always start with edamame and miso soup. The edamame is always really hot and salty, which I think makes it taste better. I think my favorite rolls are the Maverick Roll and the Crunchy Roll. I also love the Redwood City Roll but I've eaten it so much that I think I may have overloaded on it. And you know what else is cool about this place? SUSHI PORN. Sounds weird and wrong, right? Well all it is is a television screen that displays all their beautifully designed rolls and the names so you can see what they look like before you order anything. It truly is sushi porn. Sometimes I can't look away or follow the conversation that's going on at my table. I love my sushi porn. So clearly, I recommend this place. I believe it is closed on Sundays, so I'd call ahead before you head over. Oh and nearby parking costs a little bit so make sure to bring change or a dollar.

Possibly a great place for those wacky American mega-kitchen sink spicy tuna and tempura wrapped in avocado and unagi roll concoctions. The other folks around me at the counter were oohing and aahing about everything that was served to them. As for me, though, it came no where close to meeting my traditional sushi bar tastes. Very limited variety of fresh fish in the case. No seasonal specialties. They didn't even bother to display everything they had, leaving allot of the choices under the counter including sea urchin and baby scallops. Nothing creative about the preparation. They didn't even bother adding wasabi to the inside of their nigiri. This tells me they really aren't catering to the likes of me.

I've been here a few times for lunch and once for dinner. It's pretty popular for both. For dinner on a weekend, we just walked in, and had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. I think that's a little excessive for Redwood City, but I guess when there aren't to many choices, the popular ones get filled up fast. It's on the Broadway strip, which allows it some nice outdoor seating. Watch out for flies, however, which might be attracted to the raw fish, especially. I think I'm going to relegate this place to a run of the mill lunch spot. It serves its purpose. The food is decent, and the sushi is sushi. I know this review sounds like I don't like the place, but that's not the case. There's nothing spectacular about this place, but if you're craving some Japanese food or sushi, then this place will do. The prices are ok, though they are a bit high, compared to sushi places with better quality that you can find in SF. But alas, it is Redwood City.

i like! decor is simple. i like the fountain pot at the front entrance. i like how its a corner restaurant with lots of windows. i wasn't too fond of the silk flowers in jars at every table. i understand the whole cutting cost thing, but thats just a little too cheap looking for me. i mean, while i'm waiting for my order, i check out the utensils, cleanliness of the table and the sauce containers. seeing the plastic flower is.... not preferred. while looking at the menu, i noticed that their page-long chef's specials had the word "spicy" involved in every single roll! not cool.... spicy tuna, spicy sauces... wasabi is already too much for me, so i wasn't thrilled with their lack of variety of spicy and non-spicy menu items. got the 3 combo lunch plate with: -sashimi -gyoza -salmon teriyaki the sashimi was cut into decently thick pieces and was surprisingly fresh. the gyoza was yummy. the salmon teriyaki was cooked well, but was swimming in too much teriyaki sauce. this comes with a small salad and miso soup. service was quick. staff was courteous. i think this is chinese-owned because i heard some cantonese among the staff. go chinese owning a japanese restaurant! :)

Based upon the recommendations of my fellow yelpers, I was in the area viewing a movie and decided to check this place out. And I am so glad I did. We ordered karaage and edamame to start. The edamame came quite hot and steamy, but very salty and good. For sushi we shared: California roll - the usual flair, just what you would expect. The Lion King roll - my first baked sushi, which was quite good. Not too mayonaisey, but a little hard to eat. Definitely had to use my fingers for this one. The red dragon roll - I gotta give them props on the presentation of this one; it looked like a dragon! Quite good tasting also, but for some reason I thought it was supposed to have spicy tuna included. Didn't taste like it though. But I didn't mind. Copious amounts of hot tea, and the company couldn't have been better! ;-) A great introduction to dining in Redwood City!

This is a nice looking place, calming even, with a water fountain near the entrance. They have a widescreen TV on which they project images of their dishes, including the Redwood City roll which is covered in panko crumbs. There's a bar area as well. They have reasonably priced lunch specials (e.g., two item combos for $7.50), udon, rice bowls and sushi. I had the oyako don (chicken and egg over rice) which came with miso soup and salad ($7.50). The miso soup was too salty without much in it (other than miso). I like it with tofu and seaweed and this soup didn't have any. The salad was also as plain as can be; just iceberg lettuce and a creamy Asian dressing. Not even any carrots. The oyako don was okay but I can make better okay at home. The chicken was tender but the dish was bland. I found myself looking for chili pepper and pickled ginger. At least it was filling. Update: I tried the nabeyaki udon - the portion is small for nearly $9 and the broth was too salty. The outdoor table was also very dirty and they wiped it off with an even dirtier rag. Really not impressed.

Went here for sushi last week. OMG, was it good!!! Fresh, creative and delicious! They make a couple rolls that are made with Soy paper instead of seaweed; for example the Mike Roll and the Mandy Roll. Those were fantastic!! All of the rolls we had were excellent, but you really must try the Mandy and the Mike rolls. I've been craving this place since I left it. I live in the Cupertino area and I will drive to RWC to go here again and again! :-)

I love when you walk into a restaurant knowing nothing about it, no expectations and it completely blows you away! My experience at Suisha House last night was a fantastic one. We were hungry after leaving the Yelp event at Mandaloun (I didn't like fighting the hoards of people for free food, I'd rather stick to the bar) and what a nice surprise! They had TONS of rolls. And really inventive ones too! I will agree this isn't a really Japanese-y sushi place, definitely more Americanized, but I am totally OK with that. Our waiter was really nice and gave us a bunch of recommendations. We had the Redwood City Roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, & crab mayo topped with crunchy), California Roll (TASTY and fresh crab!!), I Dare You Roll(spicy tuna & cream cheese in a deep-fried jalapeno- we had it without cream cheese, and it was DAMN good, really spicy), and Mandy's Candy Roll(this was a special, no rice, crab and cucumber wrapped in rice paper with masago on top) it literally MELTED in your mouth. I have realized I am one of those people who just doesn't love sushi and I LOVED Suisha House!

So, this place was decent. I think we got the Lion King roll...very very good but they need to cut the mayo. A little too strong on that. When they tend to do that it just says that the fish isn't fresh. Usually! Secondly, the chicken karage was okay...kinda overcooked, but with the add of some lemon...it made it much better. I felt I had to dip the chicken in the sauce to overpower the churned taste. California rolls were good. The dragon roll was good. Steaming edemame was HOT, but probably the best part of the meal for me. Besides this review. I did have a very very enjoyable time. I think sometimes company makes dinner great. I had great company. For that I would have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately, I don't grade on company here, but the food. So I will have to give it 3 stars for overall food. Will come back to try other stuff though. It might be better.

Went with large group of friends to this really small place, as there was another large party where tables had to be combined, so everyone can sit together. Boy, that pretty much took up the space. Don't try to get up and mingle or go to the restroom, which there was only one unisex restroom btw. We had a variety of colorful rolls, some we questioned what was in it. I thought the kani (crab) rolls were way too salty & looked imitation-like. The cold sake was a rip off for $20 for tiny bottle. After that most of us ordered the warm sake in the large size for only $5. The cashier messed up our tabs at the end, and some of us with drink tabs were mixed in together. Took way too long for them to finally figure it out.

I have to say that I almost don't want to put in a review for this place because it's my favorite and I don't want the secret to get out. I absolutely love this place. Hands down the best sushi in the area. A lot of their rolls are listed as spicy, but you can ask for them to be made mild, if spicy isn't your thing. The only problem I've ever had in multiple trips to this restaurant is that on occasion my edemame is cold at the bottom - almost icy. Other than that, the sushi is out of this world, service is great, location fantastic and very easy parking. I can't say enough good about it! (Tip on parking in Redwood City - pay by cell phone. If you need more time on your meter - simply call and extend it from your dinner table. No more digging around for change!) and you don't need to pay for time after 8:00pm. UPDATE: 12/12/09 Now open Sundays - YAY. Still after two years of being a regular, it holds true to my original post.

My boyfriend and I were looking around for sushi the other night, and instead of driving over to Palo Alto or Atherton, we stopped here... which is right down the street from our house. He didn't tell me until we ordered that he had low expectations due to what his co-workers had said about the place. I had low expectations only after I had the opportunity to take in the atmosphere. Suisha House is located on Broadway in downtown, and appears to be banking on this fact. Although the decor is somewhat calm with opaque drapery and dark wood tables/floors, the clientele was otherwise. I was annoyed the whole time with the bar-like atmosphere... I'm not into loud eating establishments. However, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sushi here. I ordered the Philly roll and one of their special rolls (they have some on the wall as you walk in, some in the menu). The rolls weren't the best I've had, but they were decent. My boyfriend and I both had miso soup, and he had a bento box with teriaki chicken and sushimi. Overall, satisfied with the food- albeit overpriced. I'd return for the rolls, not for the prices or loud atmosphere. UPDATE: The boyfriend and I returned last week, again craving sushi but not wanting to drive. It was around 8:30 or 9pm, and we were seated and served promptly. I had two interesting rolls that are a far cry from traditional- one was decent, the other sucked. I'm docking a point for the lack of authenticity, and those damn advertising screens where they show images of their sushi that is way better than what you'll actually be served.

This is my 'go-to' sushi place. They're great with take-out and I've eaten at the restaurant quite a few times now. They're fast, fresh, yummy, and their prices are typical for the quality of sushi and service they provide. My typical order consists of: Golden Gate Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and California Roll. I'm not into the whole 'deep-fried' rolls that seem to the be standard on sushi menus but Suisha House offers a lot of variety. You'll definitely get your money's worth here!

I am surprised by some of the reviews on this place! I have only been there twice, and both times I was seated immediately, had great quick service, and fresh food. The owner/manager gave me change for my $1 so I could feed the meter, without asking if I was dining there. The rolls came before I was done with my miso. The prices were a moderate to high, but I still enjoyed it for being the best sushi in RWC.

3.5 stars $47 for the two of us, early dinner with my husband on a Saturday night before catching a 7:00 movie at the downtown RWC theatre. First of all, we're pretty sure this place is owned by Chinese folks. This is not a problem with me so long as the sushi is good. But if you're a sushi purist, you make take issue with hearing the sushi chef's speaking Chinese -- that is unless you can't tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese. :) Secondly, the food was quite good. They have a large selection of rolls though mostly using the same kind of fish in them. We ordered 4 rolls (2 of which were deep fried) and 4 pieces of sushi and were just full enough with room to spare for popcorn. sushi pieces were gigantic , fresh, and a good thick cut. That makes me happy. The service was decent. I don't like when my water glass goes low or empty--this was the case with the server here. As far as I could tell there was one server (seating guests and taking orders) for the whole place with 2 other people who brought out the orders and clear the table. At the end of dinner, there's a cute dessert they bring out made of oranges. Nice touch.

On a holiday weekend, a few places that I wanted to try were closed. I was in the mood for Japanese, so finally stop by Suisha house which was open. It was empty when we got there, the staff was friendly and service was pretty fast. We order a few rolls, appetizers and bento boxes. I think the bento box was very good value, but the roll were nothing special. It was done ok. I think it was pricy, the dinner menu looks just like the lunch menu but the price is a bit higher. I probably wouldn't go back, but nothing wrong with them, just boring. The do have a whole bunch of rolls, but they are somewhat the same variation.

Fast, friendly service and a very extensive menu. The two of us went really BIG this afternoon and still spent only $35. That bought us tea, miso soup, shumai, edamame, and THREE rolls!! I thought the Broadway roll was EXCELLENT, spicier and more flavorful than the crazy spicy roll (which was also good). The third roll we ordered was the Danny Hanabe roll -- this one was my friend's favorite. We've also had several other items on the menu in previous visits, and everything has always been great. I'll definitely be going back again and again.

I I was only rating the food I'd give them 5 stars. The service is unpredictable. Sometimes they're great & other times your ignored & your food comes out hella late. I actually had a waiter that was so rude once that I actually walked out but I go back b/c I love their food! The Redwood City Roll is amazing!! The Udon isn't too good though.. it's the one thing they just really don't make well. Other then that great food, clean, outside seating... just faulty service and a little pricey. All in all I know I'll go again and again because I love that dang Redwood City Roll!!! Oh.. by the way.. if you're ordering to go don't! Their food doesn't taste as good when you get it to go.. it's like they know you won't be there to complain so they just half-a$$ it.

This place is acceptable as a lunch spot. Never been there for dinner so can't comment on that. The sushi that they put in the lunch specials is certainly not fantastic, but I went here at least two dozen times so I can't complain too much. The people who work here are a little bizarre and not always totally nice. One of my coworkers saw the sushi chef throw a piece of sashimi against the wall because someone had sent it back. Odd. Another time, I went and my coworker mispronounced gyoza. So the waiter corrected her. Pretty rudely. But I guess that's just how they roll over at Suisha House. Since the food is decent, I'm going with three stars. I've had their bigger rolls a few times and they're actually much better than the lunch special, so I would guess going here for dinner with people that like to split rolls would be a good idea. The spicy tuna is pretty good.

After watching a movie at the AMC with some peopledown the street i was starved. After looking at the choices on the street, i wasn't really expecting much from this place. However i was surprised! The rolls are well sized and there are a lot of choices of what you can order roll wise. In addition the lunch specials which are basically just bentos come out on two plates- making the appearance slightly nicer then just having everything in a bento. My only complaint would be that the waiter reached over the ledge by our table to put down our food multiple times. How much effort is it to walk around to us? It made the experience seem really casual in a bad way and it was awkward to have an arm shoved near our faces. -1 star for poor waiter service.

Went here last night with a friend before a show at the Fox Theatre, and well, my impression was mixed. The fish quality was top-notch, and they had a good assortment of rolls. And the menu was long, and included basically every Japanese food you are likely to ever get in a restaurant in this country. The variety of fish at the bar was lacking, however. Also, and most stunningly, we sat at the sushi bar *and were completely ignored by the sushi chefs* When we sat down, I said hi to them. No response, no eye contact, no "irrashimase!" when we arrived. WTF? I have never had this experience at any sushi place, and I've eaten at probably three dozen different ones in my life. I commented on it and my friend said it had happened to him before. Also, when my friend mentioned that he really liked mackerel, and I resorted to just flat-out asking the chef right in front of us if they had any saba, since we didn't see it in the case, he looked incredulous, like OMG, you actually like saba? Uh, yeah? Can we have some? *eyeroll* This made me immediately cranky and shit-talking, unfortunately. Also, the waitstaff were totally hapless and indifferent as well, so giving up and resorting to ordering everything from our waiter wasn't exactly effective either. I got the impression that this place hasn't been open long and/or the waitstaff have never had table-waiting jobs before. The overall impression of the place was that they are trying really hard to look hip and shiny rather than giving people what they want.

Rude waiter takes the cake! True story: I'm with my family (two small kids) and we're looking for a late Sunday lunch. It's about 2:30, we're super-tired and hungry. The restaurant is almost empty, and it's a warm day, so we decide to sit outside. There's a table that has been recently vacated but not yet cleared. The kids are exhausted, so we opt to sit down at the dirty table rather than mill about. My husband carries in the dirty dishes and the tray with the tip on it inside the restaurant so that the kids won't futz with it. We wait a while for the waiter to show up, and after an eternity......he shows up with menus. The waiter is a young Asian guy with spectacles. I ask him if he can bring us some water (it's a hot day, after all), and he says, very grumpily, that he'll get to us. Remember, we're talking about late Sunday afternoon when there's hardly anyone around. At that point, the husband tells me that the waiter actually said to him when he brought the dishes in, "I don't like the way you guys are rushing me!" Hello--we are trying to help you out here! We get the picture: FAMILIES NOT WELCOME! At that point we swiftly depart and head across the street to the much more congenial Taste of Broadway Cafe. Super-nice proprietor welcomes us even though he is about to close up shop, and we are so relieved to be out of Suisha Hell House that we are ready to cry with relief when he is so kind. I don't care if the sushi might be the best on the Peninsula, it's not worth being treated like this. Needless to say, we're never going back there.

We have eaten here several times and this is now our favorite Japanese restaurant (Bonsai in Atherton used to be, but last two meals no good--love the ambiance, but not worth it). I am a big tuna fan, so ordered the tekka donburi, or tuna sashimi with rice. My husband had the dinner combo 2 for $13.50 with teriyaki chicken and tempura. My dish was rather expensive ($18.95), but it came with tons of tuna and rice and I shared with my husband. His meal was very good: teriyaki sauce not too sweet, tempura light and tasty. Service was prompt, ambiance is okay, and parking in downtown Redwood City is easy. Loved listening to Norah Jones and other gentle jazz, too. We'll be back.

I think Suisha House deserves a solid 4 stars. Not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, but definitely one of the better places. Atmosphere: The restuarant is small and popular, so you can pretty much imagine the noise factor on a Friday evening. Kinda hard to hear the person you're talking to. Probably not the best place to go on a romantic date, but a great place to go with a group of friends. Tables are cozy and fairly close together. Prices: I think as far as sushi prices go, this place is fairly standard, if not slightly less expensive than one would expect to pay. The rolls range from $5 - $15, depending on how complicated you want your sushi to be. Reccomendations: Cristina Roll, Rock n' Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Philly Roll (my guy's fav.), Edemame as an appetizer, and the Mochi Ice Cream for dessert (they have 6 flavors!). Don't get: The side salad. They have weird dressing, not the good kind that Japanese restaurants normally have. The Lion King Roll (unless you like warm sushi w/a slightly burned taste...I believe the burned taste was the sauce they poured over it and not the sushi itself). Perks: This is a great place to get takeout! They package everything nicely and it's usually ready 15-20 minutes after you call in. This is usually great for us, because we don't want to be crammed into the noisy restaurant with all the other movie-going patrons. Service: Very nice staff. Always helpful. Sometimes they're all over the place when they're super busy because there will only be 2-3 waiters for the whole place. Sushi chefs are very friendly if you sit at the counter!

Who would have thought yummy sushi in the middle of Redwood City! Stopped by here before going to watch Hangover and was pleasantly surprised. Split a box and two rolls for $30. We started with light miso soup and crisp salad with a sweet sesame dressing. The contents of the box included crispy strips of well seasoned katsu and, upon request, TWO orders of tempura! Succulent shrimp and fresh vegetables dipped in a light and crunchy batter served next to a light dipping sauce. The lion king roll has always been a favorite and Suisha House did it just right without overloading the roll with mayo. 4.5 stars if I could.

I've been here multiple times and the rolls keep bringing me back. Honestly they make them so large, that I haven't gone to a sushi joint that can match them. The owners are almost always there and if you go often enough (for me it only took twice), they will remember who you are and strike up conversation with you when you return. They're incredibly friendly. If you go during a Thurs/Fri night, it can get quite busy especially since it's a rather small restaurant, but I still think it'd be worth the wait. I always bring my friends to this place if we're craving sushi and if they convince me to go elsewhere, I always end up comparing other sushi restaurants to Suisha. Good eats fo sho!

If you are in the peninsula, Redwood City / San Mateo area, Suisha house is actually great place to grab sushi. The sushi here is by no means what you would expect from a completely authentic japanese place, but aside from the "americanized rolls," they actually serve proportions here in a comfortable and nice size. Dont get me wrong, I sometimes just crave oversized sushi rolls from like Sushi house or joy sushi, but if you want good quality rolls / sashimi in decent size proportions, come here. Additionally, they have a lot of more unique sushi dishes you cant find in other sushi places around the area. Sushi chefs are awesome and nice. Dave really treated us well. Give it a try.

They did a good job with the ambiance with the darker interior, dimmed lighting, and some fountain-like thing at the entrance. The price for the sushi rolls is quite reasonable, running at around $6-10 each. I've been to places where the special rolls starts at $15. The more conventional rolls such as california roll or crab roll had way too much rice and didn't end up tasting like anything. I found their more elaborate rolls, such as Dragon Roll and Waikiki, better. Both were obviously larger rolls but also had a lower rice-to-content ratio so you can actually taste more than just chomping on the rice. They seemed to have a lot of take out orders because I saw a good number of people coming to pick up their orders. All in all, I'm not very sure I'd visit again unless I was going to order the more elaborate rolls.

We love this place! Great sushi and wonderful owners. We've been coming to Suisha House almost since they opened a couple of years ago. The owners are so nice and friendly. But as the downtown activity starts to grow, along with their business, we start to see the service sliding a little bit. The new wait staff they have hired is not always up to the same wonderful level as the owners. But I'd still say, almost 90% of the time, service is not an issue. The food is great, they have a couple of good Japanese beers on stock and the meal ends with a great little sliced orange. We love the orange! Best sushi in downtown RWC.

9:27 pm. Tuesday night. Following a long day in the office, a frantic change into bike clothes, a sunset-beating bike ride, a stop back at the house to clean up and a screech of car tires into an empty downtown RWC parking space, we land ourselves into the entry way at Suisha House. Despite the off click of the "open" sign 30 seconds prior, we're seated with a smile, and happy to escape the small crowds that tend to emphasize Suisha House's disorganized service on a busy night. We glance at the tight lipped sushi chef behind the sushi bar but stop to admire the well coordinated interior. We dine on fish that does not reveal its inexpensive price, slurp up refreshing premium sake, and settle farther into our seats as the waitress assures us we're not stopping her from going home. Suisha House sits in the row of hip restaurants amid the antiquated and slighly delapidated buidlings in downtown RWC, each holding its own promise as the area begins to flourish. The particular promise of Suisha House would be immediately realized If they could just figure out how to deliver the damn fish, tea and check in a timely manner. Irregardless, we're still comfortable wasting away the later half of our weekday nights there.

Food was great. I'm not sure about all this traditional Japanese restaurant mumbo jumbo, but this is America and this is a good suishi restaurant. The sashimi was great. It just looked amazingly fresh. I equally enjoyed the rainbow roll (more sashimi) and caterpillar roll. I'll try to be daring next time and order the rolls named after their guests. Minus one star because the service was eh-ok. We went on a Weds night for dinner, which meant no crowd. But our server seemed like he wanted to rush us into ordering. the pensulia...a nice place to get stuck in. was checking out the revitalized part of downtown and took a look at this resturant's very extensive menu... came back for lunch and was able to make up my very own all star combo plate lineup of fried food for about 11 bucks... i had oysters, white fish and pork tonkatsu, a bowl of white rice, soup and salad...yea it was alot... actually everything was really good including the service. the resturant had a nice feel to it. a few tables to sit outside...inside was real loud.

The tables are clean and unsticky, and the utensils are pre-packed and sterile for my protection. Oh my! Not to mention, they have a flat panel TV that projects glossy images of delicious assortments of sushi. I highly suggest the redwood city roll. The little crunchies will blow your mind. Of the times I have eaten here with my fellow co-workers I have not left this establishment with the feeling of being full/satisfied. Went here with some friends after work on a Tuesday. Place was certainly not crowded, but the service was quite slow, at least to get our initial bit of food. Once the food started coming though, it all came at a pretty steady pace. Had to ask for initial glass of water, and never got any more, even though I drank down at least by the half-way point of the meal. We got a variety of sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. The fish was average. The salmon for example had a lot of stringy white fat or connective tissue. Some of the eel was among the chewier I've ever had. The avocado in the Alaska salmon roll was pretty tasty, but as much as I like avocado, I generally go for sushi when I'm looking for good fish. Not too expensive, but certainly not inexpensive. Overall, a middle-of-the-road experience with respect to food and below par in terms of service. Haven't had sushi anywhere else in Redwood City, but I've definitely found better, e.g., in Mountain View (Naminami, Sushitomi), Palo Alto (Fuki Sushi), and downtown San Mateo, although a few of the places are admittedly a bit higher-end than this place.

It a very tiny shrimp that looked a string bean! The udon was over cooked and not freshly made. It should taste like biting into glass , the former Udon place in 2nd Avenue in San Mateo had it right. 2) Roll Combinations C- California Roll, Tekka, Unagi Roll (6 pieces each) $ 12.50 The sticky California rice did not facilitate smooth sailing down my throat. Also the order did not arrive with Ginger and the Wasabi, we had to ask for it. This appears to be an authentic Japanese restaurant, why used rice that is one grade up from Costco Sushi rice? I will not be coming back. Terrible waste of my hard earn money !!!

I find it comical that anyone in the US expects traditional Japanese food, we're not in Japan homies. On that note, Suisha House offers a surprisingly extensive variety of your more typical (note - not traditional) sushi and American Japanese foods, all of which I hope to eventually consume. Their specialty rolls are so inventive and varied that anyone can find something they'll like. Flat out, this sushi is more fun and playful than most other Japanese restaurants. Now, living in SF one might think that I'm silly for finding a smaller Japanese restaurant in RWC the best yet, but it's true. In the city, if you want really good sushi you have to pay a premium for address and atmosphere, and that's the total opposite of Suisha House. Suisha House is a nice restaurant with good decor and great food. We didn't have any of our order messed up and the owner came out to chat with us and give our pooch some soy beans, very friendly. Our waiter did have the personality of a wall, but hey - he wasn't American so I can't expect him to act like one of us. Try a lot out here, I find it well worth it to experiment in places like these and can recommend a few things so far: * Pork Gyoza - Perfectly crunchy and doughy, not like the frozen pot-sticker most everyday Japanese places pawn off as gyoza. * Edamame - Served warm and lightly salted, always a fan. * Seaweed Salad - Mild sauce dished out between two fried wonton wrappers, a fun twist that's also complimentary tasting. * The Sushi Dinner Combination - My dad quickly gobbled up everything besides the squid, which my dog gladly swallowed and subsequently questioned afterwords. * Chicken Teriyaki - Served hot and both my best friend and my boy loved it in combination with the roll they each ordered. I believe it was grilled but I didn't try it. * The Crunchy Roll - total and utter deliciosity * Danny Hanabe - Awesome house-invented sushi wannabe of a friend rice pattie covered in fresh spicy tuna and jalapenos, thoroughly enjoyed every bit. * Yeffer Special - OMG, this is one that I will always come back to, like a distant lover, it is close to my heart and mi estomago. This deep-fried unagi maki dream is covered with unagi sauce, spicy mayo sauce, & tobiko. It's messy and requires hands and ends up being finger lickin' good! For five people to masticate all this awesome food and some Kirin's our bill was only $101.00 - that's basically $20 a head, you can not beat this shit in SF, you can't top the quality or taste or pricing. I will return shortly and I'm already craving it - crap, it's too soon!

I love Suisha House. For some reason I always crave it on Sundays, when they're closed, and none of the other places around can make me happy. They serve their seaweed salad with two fried wonton noodles--mmm..., and their age tofu is really good. I love their maki--Sunshine, Crazy Spicy are two of my favorites. Service is friendly and sometimes awesome, sometimes sucky--try not to get seated in the one male server's section, as he's slow and super-forgetful.

I like that they have a fair number of vegetarian choices, but nothing particularly impressed me about this meal. The sushi was edible but not great; the rice in the sushi was very warm, which made the nori a bit soggy. The onion tempura appetizer would have been good, but they cover the onion rings in spicy mayonnaise, which seemed like fat overkill to me.

Solid sushi restaurant, especially for Redwood City - MUCH better than anything offered in San Mateo. Recommend sitting at the sushi bar and chatting it up with David (they have cute pictures on the board behind the bar so you can tell who is who!). This is a good place for a date dinner and/or a group dinner with a few close friends (read: few as in 4-5, not 10).

With all the great reviews of this place, I definitely wanted to try it. Boy, was I disappointed. The servers were both nice and they tried hard. I ordered the sashimi favorite that was supposed to include my favorite fish, hamachi. I also got the laura roll which had hamachi in it. Well guess what? They ran out of hamachi!!!!! Instead of owning up to it, the waiter tried to tell me that hamachi was too "typical" and that he tried to get sumthin special for me. I'm sorry but red snapper isnt special, its cheaper at pretty much any sushi restaurant. Just be honest, you know? The fish I did get wasn't even that particularly fresh or good. I don't care who owns it, but if this is the best they got in Redwood City, im very disappointed. Maybe I might have to go back to update my review if they do better.....

Never know if we're going to get decent service at this place but went there alot anyway for lunch since there were always sushi cravings and the food is pretty good for Redwood City. I like the Sun Roll and the Crunchy Roll is fun if you dont mind gaining a pound after eating it. Cool atmosphere, good for work lunches with coworkers if you have time to spare otherwise go early before 12pm and get faster service before the lunch rush. Have to say that the flat screen depicting various well taken photos of the food etc is a good idea and can help you pick something new, also they do have a decent selection of sake.

I have to write about this place b/c I have my very own roll here! Yes, lil old me has a roll and its called "Diana Special Roll". TRY IT! It has tempura flakes, unagi, salmon with their spicy mayo sauce. I haven't made it to the menu but its been on their "specials" board for a while now. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in RWC and one of my favs. They have great rolls and bento boxes for lunch. The service is also great and prompt especially during crazy lunch hour. Try it! You won't be disappointed!

This sushi simply is not worth the price. Their menu has the prices of a legitimate sit-down sushi restaurant (9 to 11 dollars for a house roll), but the sushi is no better than what you would find at a upscale gas station mini-mart. The second rate fish and fake crab meat, coupled with their liberal use of rice to compensate for a skimpy portion of the more expensive ingredients, results in an underwhelming experience that tastes like somebody used a 20 dollar bill (yours) to scrape the slime off the scales of a ripe Chinese-farmed catfish into a rice cooker that was turned on 3 days ago. This place wasn't bad when I first starting getting takeout there about 2 years ago. The wait staff was very friendly and would even give me a container of Siricha sauce to take with me. The food wasn't anything to call mom about, but the price was right and the portions were proper. Since then, the portions have shriveled, the prices have skyrocketed, and the staff is openly hostile to preparing takeout orders. More often then not, they will hang up on you before telling you how long to expect, your total cost, or goodbye. I have been several times where, despite my cordiality, they have remained completely silent with not so much as a hello or thank you. On the upside, at least I get the satisfaction of putting a huge cross through the tip line on the receipt while the bear over me watching me sign it. If you are in the mood for sushi, you are better off going down the street to Whole Foods. At least there the fish will be fresh, the staff will be nice, and you're already expecting to pay an arm and a leg for good food.

Ever since we moved west and left our favorite Sushi spots behind in NYC, we have been craving a high quality creative sushi spot. We have found restaurants that have 1 or 2 satisfactory rolls at various different sushi stops around the penninsula, but would quickly get bored with our regular selections. Then we found Suisha House. The sleek decor of dark wood and tempting rolls displayed on flat screen TVs instantly made my mouth water. We arrived on our first visit without a reservation and were at first concerned that the crowded foyer would hinder our ability to try the delicious looking fare. Luckily, two spots opened up at the sushi bar and we were able to grab seats quite quickly. I enjoy watching the sushi chefs and we could examine all the various dishes as they await their journey to their respective diners. We had trouble picking out rolls since so many looked attractive, but everything we ordered ended up being fantastic. I loved the ahi poke in particular which had just the right amount of kick and was topped with seaweed salad. The names of the rolls are not coming to me at the moment...but they were good too. It is true that it took quite a while to get our check at the end of the evening, but the owner was so kind and chatty that I couldn't hold it against her. Plus, the check came with a very cute orange boat....when you see it you will understand. All in all, we are pleased to find Suisha House, and although we have returned only once thus far we were reconized and greeted warly. We look forward to frequent visits in the future!

Hands down the BEST sushi I have eaten in Northern California! We like the food here so much we have been here as much as 4 times per week. Everyone there from the head chef and part owner Tonshi, Part owner Daisy, Sushi Chef John, as well as the other staff including Johnny absolutely ROCK!! We always sit at the bar and have either John or Tonshi make our food. Every time that we have been there the food keeps getting better and better. Tonshi is so cool that he has actually made 3 rolls and added them to the board for me. I highly recommend the Baked Crab Roll, Danny's Hanabe, and the "I Dare You". If you want to know what is in them you must go in and try. The Baked Crab Roll is not on the menu but if you know the inside scoop you can order one and taste how delicious this roll is...it melts in your mouth! The Spicy Tuna is the best I have had, the Albacore Sushi also melts as if it were cotton candy. Everything that Tonshi and John whip up is incredible! Not only is the food EXCELLENT but they treat you like family, and welcome you to their restaurant as if it were their home. Thanks Suisha House for taking awesome care of us.... Danny & Mandy.

Sushi house is amazing. I have been all over the west coast eating sushi and nothing yet has beating Sushi Houses' house rolls with not tobeko. Wow I love those. I love going here but dont go too often because of the price. I start off with some salad and a soup, then get the 2 item meal, which is quite reasonable, then the house roll to top it off. The house roll is amazing, but like i said the specialty rolls are too pricey. They range from 8-14 dollars a roll. Overall this is a great place especially for dates before going to the movies. Cant go wrong here.

I am looking at the last 5 reviews on Suisha House and I am amazed that the stars are so low. THIS PLACE IS GREAT. I have never had bad service here. The dinning area is ALWAYS clean. The food is consistently fresh and good....I even brought my girl friend there the other night and she call a few days later asking for the # to send her husband from Belmont to pick up a to-go order, she loved it too. Sushia House was great when it first opened. The atmosphere is very pleasant and relaxing and the food was great. I have been going here for almost a year now, and I have seen this place loose its fire since it first opened. The portions have gotten smaller and sometimes over cooked and the service has been terrible as well. We usually have to wait for 10 minutes before we can get our check so my BF usually goes up to the counter to try to pay and still has to wait! There use to be a great waitress that was so friendly and sweet who always acknowledge me and my family but recently I haven't seen her and have been disappointed with the overall service. I agree that the rolls are creative and fun and they have a large selection, I just wish they had better service and larger/better quality portions.

Excellent service, good food, reasonable prices. What else can you ask for??? I'm not sure about the difference in the prices for dinner. The two item combo at lunch is $8.25 while the same is $13.50 for dinner. How much larger can the dinner serving be??? I suspect that the owner is Chinese but that shouldn't make a difference if the food is good. I had saba shioyaki which was excellent. The fish was fresh and perfectly grilled. Our group had a number of rolls and poki as well. The only thing that was a slight disappointment was the teriyaki beef bowl. If nothing else, they should include a few broccoli flowerettes and maybe a slice or two of carrot to add some color. I'm big on presentation and slices of teriyaki beef on a bed of rice without anything else doesn't cut it for me. Just being a little picky but still. Anyway, there's plenty of parking, the restaurant is nicely laid out and they do an excellent job on the sushi. If you haven't tried Suisha, it is definitely worth the trip, particularly for lunch!

Suisha has decent pricing for the great quality of sushi and dishes they serve. It has become our RWC company's local "canteen" because our employees go to Sushia House so often. I only go here for lunch, but their lunch specials are good values. Every type of meat they make is good: Teriyaki Chicken is juicy, Tonkatsu is battered just right-- crispy, but not KFC crispy. The Saba is really well pan fried too. All their Maki's are good-- Crazy Spicy Rolls are really good. Suisha does a great job of making wasabi tobikio. My manager loves the salad dressing they have there. I get excellent service from the waitstaff, especially Daisy. Great environment, food and value, overall.

Food is good, but service is UNACCEPTABLE. It's not so much that the staff is rude, although they're not particularly friendly, it's that they never have enough staff on any given night. I've been there several times for dinner, on pretty much every day of the week and weekend, and they are usually pretty busy, yet for some reason they are always short-staffed. Most likely a management problem, as staff does work hard and are incredibly busy and obviously don't have time to dilly-dally. You can wait at the door for a good 20 minutes before someone even ACKNOWLEDGES that you're there, and you can expect to be there for a couple of hours due to the extraordinarily slow service. Ambiance is nothing special. All in all, if you are in a hurry, DON'T GO HERE!!! If you don't mind waiting and waiting, food is certainly worth trying.

Decent sushi, a good variety of rolls. The fish wasn't as fresh as I've had at, say Kirala in Berkeley, but there were a lot of vegetarian options (for the husband) and I enjoyed my rainbow roll. Better sushi than most (definitely better than Barracuda's sushi conveyor belt). Maybe because we've been going for so long (before my 5 year old was born!) we've seen a progression from three stars to four. The service was slower on the clean up end, but has improved markedly. I sympathize with running a small business, you just never know when a landslide is going to hit and you'll need to staff up. The sushi is really good and is our go-to spot. They bring out the kids food fast too!

This place is awful! I am not a sushi expert, but I love it fresh and eat it often. I ordered about 5 rolls with a friend, and we ate 1 piece from each roll and they were all gross. We didn't complain, but they didn't ask why our food was hardly touched. There is something wrong with the rice they use - it's really salty. The ingredients also were not fresh; combine that with the salty rice and it is just terrible!! We had wanted to go to All Season sushi near the train station, but it is closed on Sundays. All Season Sushi is worlds better, and we went there to get our sushi fix the next night.

This is one of my favorite places to go for Sushi. Its the environment that attracts me towards the restaurant, even though I have to cross the bridge to get to it. Theres one roll inparticular that I really like, I think its called the Sunshine roll. My favorite roll. The service can be really slow though. In fact, most times I come here, Im not really satisfied with the service. Its a nice date place though I think, and theres a nice icecream/candy shop down the street.

I ordered too much food for Mr Q and I because everything looked so good. $3.35 for a bowl of edamame is a bit steep-most restaurants give you edamame. But deep fried shu mai? Yummers. They had 2 or 3 item combinations and the prices were reasonable. I also tried the crunchy roll and one with shitake mushrooms. Both were very good. I'd definitely come back.

the place is now called, suisha japanese bistro. they have superb selection of sushi rolls, appetizers and salads. their poki salad was very delicious, as well as their crunchy roll, fire dragon roll, spicy tuna roll. i like the way they use banana sauce on the crunchy roll as a sauce...very creative! service can be slow at times, but it's worth the wait for your food.

The food is decent, for a mid-week lunch place. They offer a variety of rolls, soups, meat dishes, etc. The service was always inconsistent and haphazard at best..As of today, I would classify it as Rude & Intolerable! Most people that work there are not very friendly and seem unhappy to be there..It takes about half hour to order and another half hour to get your food, which basically makes the trip a 2-hr lunch (if you're in an office environment, that might not be OK). Bottom line - if you know of a decent sushi place in the area, stick to it , this place is not worth the insults..

I averaged on a 3. For food I would give a 4 or 4.5 but for service a 2. My mother and I (both vegetarians) used to frequent this place about once every month or two. The food is delicious especially the agedashi tofu(minus bonito flakes), seaweed salad, Cats Eye Roll(shitake and avocado) and the veggie tempura roll. We love the food and this is why we used to eat here so frequently. However we have noticed that service has continually gotten worse. We once did dinner with about 6 or 7 people and people kept getting their foods at different times and two people would be done then two other people would get their food. Then one person's food came out after every single person was done and only after we asked them about it and they said it was on its way out(another 15 minutes later before they got it). Then one time my mother and I went to stop in for lunch. It is a very busy place which I think attests to the quality of food. However, we got there and there was a group in front of us that didn't get acknowledged by the staff for about 5 minutes and neither did we. After they were seated another 5-6 minutes passed and not a single server even acknowledged us to say they would seat us in a minute or even to just say hi and acknowledge us even though two tables had opened up since we came in. So we ended up leaving. We haven't been back since. I'm torn I really enjoy the food however I hate the service so undecided if we will go back or not.

Fun place to go with a group of friends. I been twice and both times celebrating birthdays with a large crowd. The quality of the food is good but the service is aweful! At sushi restaurants I always order California Rolls with soy paper substituted for seaweed and I've never had a problem doing this. When I asked for the rolls, the waitress gave me a weird look and said they don't have any soy paper. Ok, whatever, I can accept that. It's not a common request and I assumed the waitress was telling the truth when she said they did not have any soy paper. At the end of the meal the same waitress brought out a plate of some sort of dessert rolls and they were wrapped in soy paper!! I was so mad that she lied to me. I won't go back unless a friend wants to go back for their bday or something. Not impressed. There are so many sushi restaurants in RWC and San Carlos that provide much better service!

I was very disappointed with the service at Suisha House today. My first time there and I wasn't even acknowledged when I arrived. I made a reservation for 1 p.m. for 7 people, and when we arrived, we were not acknowledged. The place had several tables filled, and only two servers. They were under-staffed and busy. We arrived on time, and when neither one of the servers would give us eye contact, I approached one of the servers to let him know we had a reservation at 1 p.m. He just said o.k. and we waited, and waited, and waited. I got the attention of the other server and told him were were waiting for our table, and he said to wait a few more minutes. The server never apologized for the delay nor put much care to us. They were rude. Well, we waited, and waited again. We finally gave up and waved good-bye to one of the servers after waiting for almost 40 minutes and not getting seated with a reservation! We left disappointed and will never go there again. Instead, we went to the sushi place across the street and were extremely happy with the service, food abundance, and good sushi. I forgot the name of the place unfortunately.

A month ago the server did not greet us until 15 minutes after we were seated. I was there two weeks ago and the service was very good until we had to wait 30 minutes for our bill. This place is terrible. I hate disappointing sushi. Went here for dinner on a Friday night, and got a table right away. It wasn't very busy, but our our sushi was brought to our table so sporadically that the experience was terrible. The rolls were so unimpressive. A lot of rice, poorly wrapped so they fell apart, very little fish, and no flavor unless you drowned it in low-sodium soy sauce.

The service has been disappointing on the last few visits. On busy Friday and Saturday nights there are not enough wait or bus staff to service every table. Food is still tasty. Not happy with the smaller sushi rolls with less tobiko or warm teriyaki chicken. I went here for dinner a few nights ago and fell in love with the Rainbow Roll. It came with an assortment of fish on top of a California Roll. However, I just read some reviews and found out you can have REAL CRAB for $1 more by ordering the 'crab roll' instead. If I had known that the roll would have been even better. But it was great how it was. I can't wait to go back!! BTW I tried to Redwood City roll, I felt obligated since I live here, and it was SO GOOD. It may look intimidating but it tastes great!

We really enjoyed this place and will definitely go back. The fish was high quality, the service was extremely friendly, and they had a great selection of beers and sakes. But what really sets this place apart is the menu. In addition to all the standard sushi fare, there is also a decent selection of other Japanese items, and the most creative list of rolls in the area. Many of their roles use a special crab mayo sauce, which I really enjoyed. I look forward to going back and trying more of this awesome menu.

This is my second favorite sushi place. The rolls are huge and gorgeous and they taste fresh and delicious. The calamari appetizer is absolutely delicious. Service is good and prices are ok, a tad pricey but overall a great place.

Good stuff at a steep price--like, 6pc sashimi assortment for $16.50. You can get twice as much sashimi for the money down Broadway at Yokayama, and in my opinion the sashimi cuts at Yokayama are a bit fresher and tastier. Also they cut 'em real thick at Suisha house, like 3/8" thick, which makes for a chewy little raw-fish steak; I prefer the thinner, melt-in-your-mouth slices at Yokayama. The texture at Suisha house also made me suspect that their fish had been frozen and thawed, which tends to make it a little mealy. Nevertheless, this would be a 4-star place if it weren't quite so pricey. Due to its great location downtown, Suisha is often crowded. At dinner time, you will enjoy a much more spacious, quieter scene at Yokayama a few blocks away (Broadway / Maple).

Great sushi gem in downtown Redwood City. My friends have been raving and wanting to take me here for a long time. Great large space with lots of specials written on chalk boards. I am a big fan of places that serve their edamame hot...so big kudos to that. Below are the items that I remember ordering. All delicious and leaving you wanting more ! Cristina Roll 10.50 crab mayo, avocado, cucumber, tuna, salmon, spicy mayo, & tobiko with crunch Maverick Roll 11.95 crab mayo, avocado, tempura shrimp, cucumber, & spicy scallops Poki Salad 8.50 Ahi tuna with red onion, tobiko, & cucumbers in a spicy Hawaiian-style sauce The food presentation is well done, although I wish that they would roll their rolls more tightly. I hate it when the rice falls apart in your soy sauce little plate. I will for sure be back to Suisha House...keep up the good work !

I have been here twice. And both times, I have been teleported to a place where my dreams and hunger are met with the satisfaction of my diabolical taste buds. What does that mean? It was good. I usually order rolls with the coolest names -- like the, "Cassidy Roll" or the "Michelle Roll." I don't know how these people get to have sushi named after them but I am hoping Suisha House will name something after me for this Yelp Review. Please call my roll the "Tony B. Badass Roll." And if you were to make this roll, make it a White Tiger Roll with scallops! But anyways, when I receive the rolls, I ask myself, "Why are these rolls so small?" After I inhale about 1.5 rolls, I then say to myself, "Crap, I ordered too much." Even though the maki rolls look really small and beautiful, they are delicious and filling. I usually eat here at lunch and drink sake with my dates. I just wished my dates weren't my male co-workers. I really got to meet some hot girls in Redwood City. Sad face. :(

yummy in downtown rwc, lots of choices so i always try something new, the owners are super nice too. it can get a little busy on friday and saturdays but really where isn't on those nights. I've always had good service and enjoyed my sushi.

We came here for lunch one day, and the food was quite good. The lunch combo was pretty filling, and the katsu and fried oysters were both done well. The sashimi was slightly disappointing, but the salmon was quite good, and given that salmon is my favorite, that worked out okay. The restaurant itself has nice decor. They played jazzy music which I liked.

Good sushi. The salmon and tuna were particularly good. Service started out fine but got neglectful. My sister and walked in at around 6:15 or 6:30 pm on a Friday. The tables were maybe 1/3 full and the sushi bar only had 2 people sitting there, so I can't blame the bad service on being too crowded. The sushi chef lost or forgot to put in my order for hamachi kama and did not do anything to acknowledge, apologize nor make up for it. When I asked about the hamachi kama, the sushi chef replied that it usually takes about 20 minutes and he would check. He asked me if I still wanted it if it would be another 20 minutes and I said "no, we'll just get something else". We had finished our sushi, water and drinks and just sat there waiting. Eventually I said to the sushi chef that if the kama was coming that's great but if it's going to be much longer could we cancel out order. He said something to one of the waiters and the next thing I knew, out check was being handed to us. We got an order of Chirashi, a spicy hamachi maki and a Harvard roll. a glass of of lychee flavored sake for a total of $39. We woulda ordered more if only we coulda.

This place is awesome--fish quality can't be beat, and it's always fresh because it's consistently packed! Huge roll selection--my favorite is the Anastasia, which is basically a roll made completely out of sashimi! You may have to wait a bit for a table, especially cause the place is on the small side, but it's worth it. I've been here multiple times, and the staff has always been super nice. We recently had a party for my boyfriend & two of our friends who all have the same birthday here, resulting in a 20 person table, and they were wonderful! We felt bad taking up literally half the restaurant, but fortunately it was a weeknight and everyone was spending like mad. Love Suisha House!!!

We came here on a very busy Friday night.... Once we got a table (which was about 30 minutes) the service was good. Sushi was OK... they put some "Citrus House Sauce" on our rolls which tasted like mayo, not a fan but once scraped off the sushi was decent. I'll try it again.

My BF and I found this place one night while walking through the main streets of downtown Redwood City near the movie theater (a whole 2 or 3 blocks...haha) looking for a new place to dine when we were new to the area. Since this restaurant had quite a number of patrons in comparison to the other restaurants around, we decided to give it a try. I really liked the decor when I walked in, a pretty modernized Japanese restaurant with a red, black, and brown color scheme. However you can tell the place is getting a little worn. They have a couple flat screen TVs that showcase their various rolls which we were intrigued by and soon commented "Oh what's that"..."Let's try that" ...."Oh that looks good." We were pretty impressed with their large selection of speciality sushi rolls and the uniqueness of some of their rolls. We ordered several different rolls. Some I really liked and some I didn't care for too much (because of the raw fish)....but keep in mind this is coming from a girl that doesn't really care for sashimi. But overall there were a couple rolls that made us want to come back. Our favorite specialty sushi rolls are: 1.) The Lion King Roll (because we liked that it is baked and warm) 2.) The Yeffer Roll (it has Jufran sauce on it which makes an interesting taste... kinda sweet....something we've never seen at any other Japanese restaurant) 3.) Any of the rolls labeled with "crunchy"....rolls with tempura-like flakes drizzled all over....yummy The service has usually been prompt when we've gone here so it makes dining here quick. However it is kinda pricey for sushi. Usually around $40 for 4 speciality rolls.... We have probably been here at least 5-6 times in the past year because we are too lazy to drive anywhere more than 5 minutes away. So it's become one of our "Go to" places. It's definitely a cool place to come if your craving sushi and want to stay local. I don't think I'd drive out of my way to go here, but I would definitely give this place a shot if you do live in the area or happen to be in the area. 4 stars - for the pretty yummy sushi 3 stars - for the prices 3.5 stars - for the service 3.5 stars rounded up.....

If you eat here alone- NO ORANGE FOR YOU!! I walked over from the train station because I was starving, I didn't feel like cooking and my usual dinner partner was staying late at work. I ordered the cat's eye roll, hamachi nigiri and edamame. The food tasted okay but for the prices you would think the rice wouldn't be mushy and the hamachi wouldn't have a large piece of connective tissue that you have to pull out of you mouth mid-chew. Gross! I was too hungry to care but when paid for my meal and did not get the cut up orange that all the group diners were getting I was irritated. No orange makes me feel more alone. I might come here again with someone else to try the rolls...then again maybe not.

There are three types of sushi places in the Bay Area. There are bad sushi restaurants, authentic Japanese style sushi restaurants, and Americanized sushi restaurants with rolls and crazy sauces. Suisha House is definitely the latter. I came on a Friday night after work. They opened three minutes late (I know, who cares.... but i was hungry!). The atmosphere is pretty upscale and nice. It would be a nice date place. I sat at the sushi bar and the chef took my order directly. In general, the service was very good but the restaurant was relatively empty. I had the momo roll (spicy scallops, cucumber, hamachi, wasabi tobiko, spicy mayo sauce, it had way too much sauce...I could not tell what meat was inside the roll), the Rad Ratto roll (spicy crab mayo, unagi, cucumber, tuna, salmon, & tai, it was the best roll I had), and the Lion King roll (California roll oven baked with salmon and creamy sauce , this thing was crazy, I have never had an oven baked sushi anything). I also had the Nigori sake (I love how inexpensive sake is and how well it gets the job done). I will definitely go back, although I definitely don't think Suisha House qualifies as a "real" japanese sushi restaurant. Pardon my racist comment, but ...... "its a good place to take white people".

Suisha is one of my mid-Peninsula sushi restaurant rotation and have been here a few times. Normally sit at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs are friendly. Thus, I've had good service experience unlike some of the other commentators. However, it always takes my asking to remove plates from the table from the waiters; otherwise they don't voluntarily come. The sushi quality is better than average - would rate it a 4. The quality of the nabeyaki udon is also very good. That's why Suisha is part of our rotation. Waiter service is below average. Sitting at the sushi bar is the way to go and there's always open seats and the sushi chefs are nice. The reason this only gets a 3 stars is that pricing is slightly overpriced. I always leave satisfied with the food experience, but when the bill comes, it's always a bit higher than what I'm used to. Will still come here every once in a while and can recommend, but be prepared to pay a bit higher than average for sushi.

Our waiter was awesome and was always there when we needed to order something else, even though it was busy and crowded...the bill was so low for 5 people...each of us love our beer and our sushi! We def. thought the bill was going to be at least $300...it was only $180 for a lot of beer and a lot of sushi...location is great...service is great...price is great.

I've been coming here since it opened (I've probably eaten here close to ten times), and it never disappoints. The fish is fresh, the rolls are creative, the prices are good ($6 to $12 for a roll of 6 or 8 pieces), and the service is attentive. After your meal, they bring you a little hut made out of an orange; it's a fun, free dessert that is very refreshing after a sushi dinner. Not much more to say about this place...I've had a great sushi experience every time I've been here, and I will be coming back for as long as they remain in business.

I didn't have time to have lunch - and my hungry monster was starting to make noise. It wanted food now! So, we parked the car on Broadway thinking we were going to have Mexican for lunch...but as I looked down the street, I spied a restaurant that served my favorite food - SUSHI! As we entered the restaurant, noticed the soothing decor of Suisha House. Since we arrived after the lunch crowd, we were told to sit where we wanted. We chose to sit towards the front window that had a wonderful view of the Broadway section of downtown Redwood City. We were serenaded with the sound of water trickling in the fountain. In scanning their lunch menu, the prices were very reasonable. I ordered the oyako donburi that came with salad and miso soup. I agree with Lolia that the miso was a bit on the salty side and not much tofu. I was equally unimpressed with the salad - just pieces of iceberg lettuce with dressing - meh. The chicken in the donburi (mostly thigh meat) was tender, but there was not much egg. It was ok, but I was hungry and still had to tame that hungry monster! S ordered the teriyaki beef salad - something unique that we have not seen in other Japanese restaurants. The beef was cooked medium rare with strips of fried wontons. The dressing, although very rich, was very yummy. Kinda makes me wish I ordered this too! The best part of our meal was the Anastasia roll. The sashimi roll was three types of fish rolled up in tuna with poki sauce . OH YUM! ~ My hungry monster is happy! This roll deserves a star all by itself. The service was prompt and courteous. I'm looking forward coming back to try more sushi rolls, but I'll probably stay away from the donburi dishes in the future.

I have been going here for a few years and have watched the menu pleasently evolve. The food has always been pretty good and consistent. The service, however, is another story. On numerous occaisions my friends have orderd the 2 item combo with terriyaki chicken and beef. Each time, the order has come out stone cold. Also, the last time I was there, my party was one of the last on a Saturday night. We had order a number of differner rolls, saki and beers, but had not received them all throughout our meal. The wait staff were unattentive and delivering the bill was slow as molasses. When the bill finally came, we found we had been charged for all the items that never made it to our table- about $18 worth. This is not cool and the tip certainly reflected that. I do have to say sushi is fresh and delicious- Anastasia roll is amazing...... Too bad the service pretty much sucks.

Let me start by saying I am NOT a sushi traditionalist. I like inventive, strange rolls, flash frying, and yes, even mayonnaise. I know, the horror. But please keep this in mind and if you are anything like me, read on. Suisha House is my favorite sushi place. There, I said it. FAVORITE! I have been there many, many times and have never been disappointed with anything, including the service. Even when it's really busy I never felt neglected. I always start with edamame and miso soup. The edamame is always really hot and salty, which I think makes it taste better. I think my favorite rolls are the Maverick Roll and the Crunchy Roll. I also love the Redwood City Roll but I've eaten it so much that I think I may have overloaded on it. And you know what else is cool about this place? SUSHI PORN. Sounds weird and wrong, right? Well all it is is a television screen that displays all their beautifully designed rolls and the names so you can see what they look like before you order anything. It truly is sushi porn. Sometimes I can't look away or follow the conversation that's going on at my table. I love my sushi porn. So clearly, I recommend this place. I believe it is closed on Sundays, so I'd call ahead before you head over. Oh and nearby parking costs a little bit so make sure to bring change or a dollar.

Possibly a great place for those wacky American mega-kitchen sink spicy tuna and tempura wrapped in avocado and unagi roll concoctions. The other folks around me at the counter were oohing and aahing about everything that was served to them. As for me, though, it came no where close to meeting my traditional sushi bar tastes. Very limited variety of fresh fish in the case. No seasonal specialties. They didn't even bother to display everything they had, leaving allot of the choices under the counter including sea urchin and baby scallops. Nothing creative about the preparation. They didn't even bother adding wasabi to the inside of their nigiri. This tells me they really aren't catering to the likes of me.

I really like this place. I frequent many sushi places around the bay area and for this place to be so close to work I have to say that I enjoy the location the food is great and the staff is pretty quick. I would recommend this place to my friends for sure.

I've been here a few times for lunch and once for dinner. It's pretty popular for both. For dinner on a weekend, we just walked in, and had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. I think that's a little excessive for Redwood City, but I guess when there aren't to many choices, the popular ones get filled up fast. It's on the Broadway strip, which allows it some nice outdoor seating. Watch out for flies, however, which might be attracted to the raw fish, especially. I think I'm going to relegate this place to a run of the mill lunch spot. It serves its purpose. The food is decent, and the sushi is sushi. I know this review sounds like I don't like the place, but that's not the case. There's nothing spectacular about this place, but if you're craving some Japanese food or sushi, then this place will do. The prices are ok, though they are a bit high, compared to sushi places with better quality that you can find in SF. But alas, it is Redwood City.

i like! decor is simple. i like the fountain pot at the front entrance. i like how its a corner restaurant with lots of windows. i wasn't too fond of the silk flowers in jars at every table. i understand the whole cutting cost thing, but thats just a little too cheap looking for me. i mean, while i'm waiting for my order, i check out the utensils, cleanliness of the table and the sauce containers. seeing the plastic flower is.... not preferred. while looking at the menu, i noticed that their page-long chef's specials had the word "spicy" involved in every single roll! not cool.... spicy tuna, spicy sauces... wasabi is already too much for me, so i wasn't thrilled with their lack of variety of spicy and non-spicy menu items. got the 3 combo lunch plate with: -sashimi -gyoza -salmon teriyaki the sashimi was cut into decently thick pieces and was surprisingly fresh. the gyoza was yummy. the salmon teriyaki was cooked well, but was swimming in too much teriyaki sauce. this comes with a small salad and miso soup. service was quick. staff was courteous. i think this is chinese-owned because i heard some cantonese among the staff. go chinese owning a japanese restaurant! :)

Based upon the recommendations of my fellow yelpers, I was in the area viewing a movie and decided to check this place out. And I am so glad I did. We ordered karaage and edamame to start. The edamame came quite hot and steamy, but very salty and good. For sushi we shared: California roll - the usual flair, just what you would expect. The Lion King roll - my first baked sushi, which was quite good. Not too mayonaisey, but a little hard to eat. Definitely had to use my fingers for this one. The red dragon roll - I gotta give them props on the presentation of this one; it looked like a dragon! Quite good tasting also, but for some reason I thought it was supposed to have spicy tuna included. Didn't taste like it though. But I didn't mind. Copious amounts of hot tea, and the company couldn't have been better! ;-) A great introduction to dining in Redwood City!

This is a nice looking place, calming even, with a water fountain near the entrance. They have a widescreen TV on which they project images of their dishes, including the Redwood City roll which is covered in panko crumbs. There's a bar area as well. They have reasonably priced lunch specials (e.g., two item combos for $7.50), udon, rice bowls and sushi. I had the oyako don (chicken and egg over rice) which came with miso soup and salad ($7.50). The miso soup was too salty without much in it (other than miso). I like it with tofu and seaweed and this soup didn't have any. The salad was also as plain as can be; just iceberg lettuce and a creamy Asian dressing. Not even any carrots. The oyako don was okay but I can make better okay at home. The chicken was tender but the dish was bland. I found myself looking for chili pepper and pickled ginger. At least it was filling. Update: I tried the nabeyaki udon - the portion is small for nearly $9 and the broth was too salty. The outdoor table was also very dirty and they wiped it off with an even dirtier rag. Really not impressed.

Went here for sushi last week. OMG, was it good!!! Fresh, creative and delicious! They make a couple rolls that are made with Soy paper instead of seaweed; for example the Mike Roll and the Mandy Roll. Those were fantastic!! All of the rolls we had were excellent, but you really must try the Mandy and the Mike rolls. I've been craving this place since I left it. I live in the Cupertino area and I will drive to RWC to go here again and again! :-)

The sushi rice a bit too mushy. I think this place is owned and run by Cantonese people. I saw one woman going around talking to different tables. I guess that's the way to do it to attract returning customers? One plus: They give two oranges and it's wedged/sliced really nicely. Prices - mediocre. $6-$8. The flat screen tv with sushi orders make this place impressionable?

I love when you walk into a restaurant knowing nothing about it, no expectations and it completely blows you away! My experience at Suisha House last night was a fantastic one. We were hungry after leaving the Yelp event at Mandaloun (I didn't like fighting the hoards of people for free food, I'd rather stick to the bar) and what a nice surprise! They had TONS of rolls. And really inventive ones too! I will agree this isn't a really Japanese-y sushi place, definitely more Americanized, but I am totally OK with that. Our waiter was really nice and gave us a bunch of recommendations. We had the Redwood City Roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, & crab mayo topped with crunchy), California Roll (TASTY and fresh crab!!), I Dare You Roll(spicy tuna & cream cheese in a deep-fried jalapeno- we had it without cream cheese, and it was DAMN good, really spicy), and Mandy's Candy Roll(this was a special, no rice, crab and cucumber wrapped in rice paper with masago on top) it literally MELTED in your mouth. I have realized I am one of those people who just doesn't love sushi and I LOVED Suisha House!

So, this place was decent. I think we got the Lion King roll...very very good but they need to cut the mayo. A little too strong on that. When they tend to do that it just says that the fish isn't fresh. Usually! Secondly, the chicken karage was okay...kinda overcooked, but with the add of some lemon...it made it much better. I felt I had to dip the chicken in the sauce to overpower the churned taste. California rolls were good. The dragon roll was good. Steaming edemame was HOT, but probably the best part of the meal for me. Besides this review. I did have a very very enjoyable time. I think sometimes company makes dinner great. I had great company. For that I would have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately, I don't grade on company here, but the food. So I will have to give it 3 stars for overall food. Will come back to try other stuff though. It might be better.

Went with large group of friends to this really small place, as there was another large party where tables had to be combined, so everyone can sit together. Boy, that pretty much took up the space. Don't try to get up and mingle or go to the restroom, which there was only one unisex restroom btw. We had a variety of colorful rolls, some we questioned what was in it. I thought the kani (crab) rolls were way too salty & looked imitation-like. The cold sake was a rip off for $20 for tiny bottle. After that most of us ordered the warm sake in the large size for only $5. The cashier messed up our tabs at the end, and some of us with drink tabs were mixed in together. Took way too long for them to finally figure it out.

I have to say that I almost don't want to put in a review for this place because it's my favorite and I don't want the secret to get out. I absolutely love this place. Hands down the best sushi in the area. A lot of their rolls are listed as spicy, but you can ask for them to be made mild, if spicy isn't your thing. The only problem I've ever had in multiple trips to this restaurant is that on occasion my edemame is cold at the bottom - almost icy. Other than that, the sushi is out of this world, service is great, location fantastic and very easy parking. I can't say enough good about it! (Tip on parking in Redwood City - pay by cell phone. If you need more time on your meter - simply call and extend it from your dinner table. No more digging around for change!) and you don't need to pay for time after 8:00pm. UPDATE: 12/12/09 Now open Sundays - YAY. Still after two years of being a regular, it holds true to my original post.

This place used to be great, but then the service and quality went down hill. It is now very difficult to get the wait staff to take your order, serve you, or even remember to refill your water glass. Also, their menu doesn't specifically mention what will be on the sushi rolls themselves. My friend got one that was loaded with Mayo and that was definitely not on the menu! If you are in a rush or even trying to get a meal before going to the moview, this is not the place to go.

My boyfriend and I were looking around for sushi the other night, and instead of driving over to Palo Alto or Atherton, we stopped here... which is right down the street from our house. He didn't tell me until we ordered that he had low expectations due to what his co-workers had said about the place. I had low expectations only after I had the opportunity to take in the atmosphere. Suisha House is located on Broadway in downtown, and appears to be banking on this fact. Although the decor is somewhat calm with opaque drapery and dark wood tables/floors, the clientele was otherwise. I was annoyed the whole time with the bar-like atmosphere... I'm not into loud eating establishments. However, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sushi here. I ordered the Philly roll and one of their special rolls (they have some on the wall as you walk in, some in the menu). The rolls weren't the best I've had, but they were decent. My boyfriend and I both had miso soup, and he had a bento box with teriaki chicken and sushimi. Overall, satisfied with the food- albeit overpriced. I'd return for the rolls, not for the prices or loud atmosphere. UPDATE: The boyfriend and I returned last week, again craving sushi but not wanting to drive. It was around 8:30 or 9pm, and we were seated and served promptly. I had two interesting rolls that are a far cry from traditional- one was decent, the other sucked. I'm docking a point for the lack of authenticity, and those damn advertising screens where they show images of their sushi that is way better than what you'll actually be served.

This is my 'go-to' sushi place. They're great with take-out and I've eaten at the restaurant quite a few times now. They're fast, fresh, yummy, and their prices are typical for the quality of sushi and service they provide. My typical order consists of: Golden Gate Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and California Roll. I'm not into the whole 'deep-fried' rolls that seem to the be standard on sushi menus but Suisha House offers a lot of variety. You'll definitely get your money's worth here!

I am surprised by some of the reviews on this place! I have only been there twice, and both times I was seated immediately, had great quick service, and fresh food. The owner/manager gave me change for my $1 so I could feed the meter, without asking if I was dining there. The rolls came before I was done with my miso. The prices were a moderate to high, but I still enjoyed it for being the best sushi in RWC.

3.5 stars $47 for the two of us, early dinner with my husband on a Saturday night before catching a 7:00 movie at the downtown RWC theatre. First of all, we're pretty sure this place is owned by Chinese folks. This is not a problem with me so long as the sushi is good. But if you're a sushi purist, you make take issue with hearing the sushi chef's speaking Chinese -- that is unless you can't tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese. :) Secondly, the food was quite good. They have a large selection of rolls though mostly using the same kind of fish in them. We ordered 4 rolls (2 of which were deep fried) and 4 pieces of sushi and were just full enough with room to spare for popcorn. sushi pieces were gigantic , fresh, and a good thick cut. That makes me happy. The service was decent. I don't like when my water glass goes low or empty--this was the case with the server here. As far as I could tell there was one server (seating guests and taking orders) for the whole place with 2 other people who brought out the orders and clear the table. At the end of dinner, there's a cute dessert they bring out made of oranges. Nice touch.

On a holiday weekend, a few places that I wanted to try were closed. I was in the mood for Japanese, so finally stop by Suisha house which was open. It was empty when we got there, the staff was friendly and service was pretty fast. We order a few rolls, appetizers and bento boxes. I think the bento box was very good value, but the roll were nothing special. It was done ok. I think it was pricy, the dinner menu looks just like the lunch menu but the price is a bit higher. I probably wouldn't go back, but nothing wrong with them, just boring. The do have a whole bunch of rolls, but they are somewhat the same variation.

Fast, friendly service and a very extensive menu. The two of us went really BIG this afternoon and still spent only $35. That bought us tea, miso soup, shumai, edamame, and THREE rolls!! I thought the Broadway roll was EXCELLENT, spicier and more flavorful than the crazy spicy roll (which was also good). The third roll we ordered was the Danny Hanabe roll -- this one was my friend's favorite. We've also had several other items on the menu in previous visits, and everything has always been great. I'll definitely be going back again and again.

I I was only rating the food I'd give them 5 stars. The service is unpredictable. Sometimes they're great & other times your ignored & your food comes out hella late. I actually had a waiter that was so rude once that I actually walked out but I go back b/c I love their food! The Redwood City Roll is amazing!! The Udon isn't too good though.. it's the one thing they just really don't make well. Other then that great food, clean, outside seating... just faulty service and a little pricey. All in all I know I'll go again and again because I love that dang Redwood City Roll!!! Oh.. by the way.. if you're ordering to go don't! Their food doesn't taste as good when you get it to go.. it's like they know you won't be there to complain so they just half-a$$ it.

This place is acceptable as a lunch spot. Never been there for dinner so can't comment on that. The sushi that they put in the lunch specials is certainly not fantastic, but I went here at least two dozen times so I can't complain too much. The people who work here are a little bizarre and not always totally nice. One of my coworkers saw the sushi chef throw a piece of sashimi against the wall because someone had sent it back. Odd. Another time, I went and my coworker mispronounced gyoza. So the waiter corrected her. Pretty rudely. But I guess that's just how they roll over at Suisha House. Since the food is decent, I'm going with three stars. I've had their bigger rolls a few times and they're actually much better than the lunch special, so I would guess going here for dinner with people that like to split rolls would be a good idea. The spicy tuna is pretty good.

After watching a movie at the AMC with some peopledown the street i was starved. After looking at the choices on the street, i wasn't really expecting much from this place. However i was surprised! The rolls are well sized and there are a lot of choices of what you can order roll wise. In addition the lunch specials which are basically just bentos come out on two plates- making the appearance slightly nicer then just having everything in a bento. My only complaint would be that the waiter reached over the ledge by our table to put down our food multiple times. How much effort is it to walk around to us? It made the experience seem really casual in a bad way and it was awkward to have an arm shoved near our faces. -1 star for poor waiter service.

Went here last night with a friend before a show at the Fox Theatre, and well, my impression was mixed. The fish quality was top-notch, and they had a good assortment of rolls. And the menu was long, and included basically every Japanese food you are likely to ever get in a restaurant in this country. The variety of fish at the bar was lacking, however. Also, and most stunningly, we sat at the sushi bar *and were completely ignored by the sushi chefs* When we sat down, I said hi to them. No response, no eye contact, no "irrashimase!" when we arrived. WTF? I have never had this experience at any sushi place, and I've eaten at probably three dozen different ones in my life. I commented on it and my friend said it had happened to him before. Also, when my friend mentioned that he really liked mackerel, and I resorted to just flat-out asking the chef right in front of us if they had any saba, since we didn't see it in the case, he looked incredulous, like OMG, you actually like saba? Uh, yeah? Can we have some? *eyeroll* This made me immediately cranky and shit-talking, unfortunately. Also, the waitstaff were totally hapless and indifferent as well, so giving up and resorting to ordering everything from our waiter wasn't exactly effective either. I got the impression that this place hasn't been open long and/or the waitstaff have never had table-waiting jobs before. The overall impression of the place was that they are trying really hard to look hip and shiny rather than giving people what they want.

Rude waiter takes the cake! True story: I'm with my family (two small kids) and we're looking for a late Sunday lunch. It's about 2:30, we're super-tired and hungry. The restaurant is almost empty, and it's a warm day, so we decide to sit outside. There's a table that has been recently vacated but not yet cleared. The kids are exhausted, so we opt to sit down at the dirty table rather than mill about. My husband carries in the dirty dishes and the tray with the tip on it inside the restaurant so that the kids won't futz with it. We wait a while for the waiter to show up, and after an eternity......he shows up with menus. The waiter is a young Asian guy with spectacles. I ask him if he can bring us some water (it's a hot day, after all), and he says, very grumpily, that he'll get to us. Remember, we're talking about late Sunday afternoon when there's hardly anyone around. At that point, the husband tells me that the waiter actually said to him when he brought the dishes in, "I don't like the way you guys are rushing me!" Hello--we are trying to help you out here! We get the picture: FAMILIES NOT WELCOME! At that point we swiftly depart and head across the street to the much more congenial Taste of Broadway Cafe. Super-nice proprietor welcomes us even though he is about to close up shop, and we are so relieved to be out of Suisha Hell House that we are ready to cry with relief when he is so kind. I don't care if the sushi might be the best on the Peninsula, it's not worth being treated like this. Needless to say, we're never going back there.

We have eaten here several times and this is now our favorite Japanese restaurant (Bonsai in Atherton used to be, but last two meals no good--love the ambiance, but not worth it). I am a big tuna fan, so ordered the tekka donburi, or tuna sashimi with rice. My husband had the dinner combo 2 for $13.50 with teriyaki chicken and tempura. My dish was rather expensive ($18.95), but it came with tons of tuna and rice and I shared with my husband. His meal was very good: teriyaki sauce not too sweet, tempura light and tasty. Service was prompt, ambiance is okay, and parking in downtown Redwood City is easy. Loved listening to Norah Jones and other gentle jazz, too. We'll be back.

I think Suisha House deserves a solid 4 stars. Not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, but definitely one of the better places. Atmosphere: The restuarant is small and popular, so you can pretty much imagine the noise factor on a Friday evening. Kinda hard to hear the person you're talking to. Probably not the best place to go on a romantic date, but a great place to go with a group of friends. Tables are cozy and fairly close together. Prices: I think as far as sushi prices go, this place is fairly standard, if not slightly less expensive than one would expect to pay. The rolls range from $5 - $15, depending on how complicated you want your sushi to be. Reccomendations: Cristina Roll, Rock n' Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Philly Roll (my guy's fav.), Edemame as an appetizer, and the Mochi Ice Cream for dessert (they have 6 flavors!). Don't get: The side salad. They have weird dressing, not the good kind that Japanese restaurants normally have. The Lion King Roll (unless you like warm sushi w/a slightly burned taste...I believe the burned taste was the sauce they poured over it and not the sushi itself). Perks: This is a great place to get takeout! They package everything nicely and it's usually ready 15-20 minutes after you call in. This is usually great for us, because we don't want to be crammed into the noisy restaurant with all the other movie-going patrons. Service: Very nice staff. Always helpful. Sometimes they're all over the place when they're super busy because there will only be 2-3 waiters for the whole place. Sushi chefs are very friendly if you sit at the counter!

Who would have thought yummy sushi in the middle of Redwood City! Stopped by here before going to watch Hangover and was pleasantly surprised. Split a box and two rolls for $30. We started with light miso soup and crisp salad with a sweet sesame dressing. The contents of the box included crispy strips of well seasoned katsu and, upon request, TWO orders of tempura! Succulent shrimp and fresh vegetables dipped in a light and crunchy batter served next to a light dipping sauce. The lion king roll has always been a favorite and Suisha House did it just right without overloading the roll with mayo. 4.5 stars if I could.

Being new to RWC we were in search of a good sushi spot. We stumbled upon Suisha House. They have super fresh fish and lots of great rolls. They even have Walu which is a hard find. It's a little pricy but still worth checking out.

I've been here multiple times and the rolls keep bringing me back. Honestly they make them so large, that I haven't gone to a sushi joint that can match them. The owners are almost always there and if you go often enough (for me it only took twice), they will remember who you are and strike up conversation with you when you return. They're incredibly friendly. If you go during a Thurs/Fri night, it can get quite busy especially since it's a rather small restaurant, but I still think it'd be worth the wait. I always bring my friends to this place if we're craving sushi and if they convince me to go elsewhere, I always end up comparing other sushi restaurants to Suisha. Good eats fo sho!

If you are in the peninsula, Redwood City / San Mateo area, Suisha house is actually great place to grab sushi. The sushi here is by no means what you would expect from a completely authentic japanese place, but aside from the "americanized rolls," they actually serve proportions here in a comfortable and nice size. Dont get me wrong, I sometimes just crave oversized sushi rolls from like Sushi house or joy sushi, but if you want good quality rolls / sashimi in decent size proportions, come here. Additionally, they have a lot of more unique sushi dishes you cant find in other sushi places around the area. Sushi chefs are awesome and nice. Dave really treated us well. Give it a try.

I really really love the vegi rolls here!!! They did a good job with the ambiance with the darker interior, dimmed lighting, and some fountain-like thing at the entrance. The price for the sushi rolls is quite reasonable, running at around $6-10 each. I've been to places where the special rolls starts at $15. The more conventional rolls such as california roll or crab roll had way too much rice and didn't end up tasting like anything. I found their more elaborate rolls, such as Dragon Roll and Waikiki, better. Both were obviously larger rolls but also had a lower rice-to-content ratio so you can actually taste more than just chomping on the rice. They seemed to have a lot of take out orders because I saw a good number of people coming to pick up their orders. All in all, I'm not very sure I'd visit again unless I was going to order the more elaborate rolls.

We love this place! Great sushi and wonderful owners. We've been coming to Suisha House almost since they opened a couple of years ago. The owners are so nice and friendly. But as the downtown activity starts to grow, along with their business, we start to see the service sliding a little bit. The new wait staff they have hired is not always up to the same wonderful level as the owners. But I'd still say, almost 90% of the time, service is not an issue. The food is great, they have a couple of good Japanese beers on stock and the meal ends with a great little sliced orange. We love the orange! Best sushi in downtown RWC.

Been there twice, once with friends after a night of adult beverages, the other on a Sunday afternoon. California Rolls were better the first night but still tasty the second time. The $75.00 4-Person platter is a decent value as far as I'm concerned, with a good mix of different types of sushi. 9:27 pm. Tuesday night. Following a long day in the office, a frantic change into bike clothes, a sunset-beating bike ride, a stop back at the house to clean up and a screech of car tires into an empty downtown RWC parking space, we land ourselves into the entry way at Suisha House. Despite the off click of the "open" sign 30 seconds prior, we're seated with a smile, and happy to escape the small crowds that tend to emphasize Suisha House's disorganized service on a busy night. We glance at the tight lipped sushi chef behind the sushi bar but stop to admire the well coordinated interior. We dine on fish that does not reveal its inexpensive price, slurp up refreshing premium sake, and settle farther into our seats as the waitress assures us we're not stopping her from going home. Suisha House sits in the row of hip restaurants amid the antiquated and slighly delapidated buidlings in downtown RWC, each holding its own promise as the area begins to flourish. The particular promise of Suisha House would be immediately realized If they could just figure out how to deliver the damn fish, tea and check in a timely manner. Irregardless, we're still comfortable wasting away the later half of our weekday nights there.

Went here last night, not expecting too much, but hoping for the best. Nice decor, very airy interior (plus one star). Good hamachi nigiri, which is one of the standards I judge my sushi houses by (plus one more star). Fun selection of house specialty rolls, including citrus salmon and asparagus roll, white paradise roll (or something similar), firey dragon roll . . . . and fast kitchen turnaround (plus another star). Three of us super pigged out on five rolls and two orders of nigiri plus seaweed salad and hot tea for twenty bucks each = grand total of four stars. will go back here next time I'm in RWC, and next time, I'll try some sake too.

Food was great. I'm not sure about all this traditional Japanese restaurant mumbo jumbo, but this is America and this is a good suishi restaurant. The sashimi was great. It just looked amazingly fresh. I equally enjoyed the rainbow roll (more sashimi) and caterpillar roll. I'll try to be daring next time and order the rolls named after their guests. Minus one star because the service was eh-ok. We went on a Weds night for dinner, which meant no crowd. But our server seemed like he wanted to rush us into ordering. Other than that, it was fantastic.

the pensulia...a nice place to get stuck in. was checking out the revitalized part of downtown and took a look at this resturant's very extensive menu... came back for lunch and was able to make up my very own all star combo plate lineup of fried food for about 11 bucks... i had oysters, white fish and pork tonkatsu, a bowl of white rice, soup and salad...yea it was alot... actually everything was really good including the service. the resturant had a nice feel to it. a few tables to sit outside...inside was real loud.

The tea could be hotter, the cups could be cleaner, the menus could be more solid (a plastic clipboard with papers floppily attached to them) but other than that this place is tasty-town USA good american funtime jamboree! The tables are clean and unsticky, and the utensils are pre-packed and sterile for my protection. Oh my! Not to mention, they have a flat panel TV that projects glossy images of delicious assortments of sushi. I highly suggest the redwood city roll. The little crunchies will blow your mind. If you go at lunch time with your coworkers, expect a little wait. But the crunchies will go down your throat and lodge themselves in your heart. In a loving and memorable way.

I have eaten here for lunch once in a blue moon for almost three years. Of the times I have eaten here with my fellow co-workers I have not left this establishment with the feeling of being full/satisfied. I would typically order the 3 item - combination of beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, and salmon. In my opinion, the portions of each item are too small. Despite this, I must say that this place is always seems to be busy. There is typically a wait for a table during the rush and the service is OK.

The couple next to us left in an huff after waiting forever & then getting their order messed up. We took some deep breaths & were assuaged by the food being so great. Went here with some friends after work on a Tuesday. Place was certainly not crowded, but the service was quite slow, at least to get our initial bit of food. Once the food started coming though, it all came at a pretty steady pace. Had to ask for initial glass of water, and never got any more, even though I drank down at least by the half-way point of the meal. We got a variety of sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. The fish was average. The salmon for example had a lot of stringy white fat or connective tissue. Some of the eel was among the chewier I've ever had. The avocado in the Alaska salmon roll was pretty tasty, but as much as I like avocado, I generally go for sushi when I'm looking for good fish. Not too expensive, but certainly not inexpensive. Overall, a middle-of-the-road experience with respect to food and below par in terms of service. Haven't had sushi anywhere else in Redwood City, but I've definitely found better, e.g., in Mountain View (Naminami, Sushitomi), Palo Alto (Fuki Sushi), and downtown San Mateo, although a few of the places are admittedly a bit higher-end than this place.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here every couple of weeks for the last four years and every time our food is DELICIOUS! This is one of the few Japanese restaurants that is consistent with the quality of their food. Only reason, I checked out this place is the high marks given by fellow Yelpers. I celebrated my 5/2 B-day Lunch @ Noon here. First bad sign, the place was almost full, the waiter/greeter did not smile and they seemed to short one waiter/waitress. The restaurant was named to mean "waterwheel", no such serene ambiance, the noise level way up We order : 1) Nabeyaki Udon cooked with ebi tempura, chicken, & egg $ 8.95 The dish first arrived with only the chicken & egg, Waitress inform us the The ebi tempura is coming, well imagine 1/2 of 1/2 of a Shrimp, my simple math makes1/4. It a very tiny shrimp that looked a string bean! The udon was over cooked and not freshly made. It should taste like biting into glass , the former Udon place in 2nd Avenue in San Mateo had it right. 2) Roll Combinations C- California Roll, Tekka, Unagi Roll (6 pieces each) $ 12.50 The sticky California rice did not facilitate smooth sailing down my throat. Also the order did not arrive with Ginger and the Wasabi, we had to ask for it. This appears to be an authentic Japanese restaurant, why used rice that is one grade up from Costco Sushi rice? I will not be coming back. Terrible waste of my hard earn money !!!

I find it comical that anyone in the US expects traditional Japanese food, we're not in Japan homies. On that note, Suisha House offers a surprisingly extensive variety of your more typical (note - not traditional) sushi and American Japanese foods, all of which I hope to eventually consume. Their specialty rolls are so inventive and varied that anyone can find something they'll like. Flat out, this sushi is more fun and playful than most other Japanese restaurants. Now, living in SF one might think that I'm silly for finding a smaller Japanese restaurant in RWC the best yet, but it's true. In the city, if you want really good sushi you have to pay a premium for address and atmosphere, and that's the total opposite of Suisha House. Suisha House is a nice restaurant with good decor and great food. We didn't have any of our order messed up and the owner came out to chat with us and give our pooch some soy beans, very friendly. Our waiter did have the personality of a wall, but hey - he wasn't American so I can't expect him to act like one of us. Try a lot out here, I find it well worth it to experiment in places like these and can recommend a few things so far: * Pork Gyoza - Perfectly crunchy and doughy, not like the frozen pot-sticker most everyday Japanese places pawn off as gyoza. * Edamame - Served warm and lightly salted, always a fan. * Seaweed Salad - Mild sauce dished out between two fried wonton wrappers, a fun twist that's also complimentary tasting. * The Sushi Dinner Combination - My dad quickly gobbled up everything besides the squid, which my dog gladly swallowed and subsequently questioned afterwords. * Chicken Teriyaki - Served hot and both my best friend and my boy loved it in combination with the roll they each ordered. I believe it was grilled but I didn't try it. * The Crunchy Roll - total and utter deliciosity * Danny Hanabe - Awesome house-invented sushi wannabe of a friend rice pattie covered in fresh spicy tuna and jalapenos, thoroughly enjoyed every bit. * Yeffer Special - OMG, this is one that I will always come back to, like a distant lover, it is close to my heart and mi estomago. This deep-fried unagi maki dream is covered with unagi sauce, spicy mayo sauce, & tobiko. It's messy and requires hands and ends up being finger lickin' good! For five people to masticate all this awesome food and some Kirin's our bill was only $101.00 - that's basically $20 a head, you can not beat this shit in SF, you can't top the quality or taste or pricing. I will return shortly and I'm already craving it - crap, it's too soon!

I love Suisha House. For some reason I always crave it on Sundays, when they're closed, and none of the other places around can make me happy. They serve their seaweed salad with two fried wonton noodles--mmm..., and their age tofu is really good. I love their maki--Sunshine, Crazy Spicy are two of my favorites. Service is friendly and sometimes awesome, sometimes sucky--try not to get seated in the one male server's section, as he's slow and super-forgetful.

I like that they have a fair number of vegetarian choices, but nothing particularly impressed me about this meal. The sushi was edible but not great; the rice in the sushi was very warm, which made the nori a bit soggy. The onion tempura appetizer would have been good, but they cover the onion rings in spicy mayonnaise, which seemed like fat overkill to me.

This place was awesome; I was skeptical at first because there was nobody in the restaurant, but then became a true believer, because the food was fantastic. Variety was awesome - I was able to order things which I normally don't get to - which is a plus and the service was excellent - this place is definitely one of the better places for Sushi in the peninsula. Redwood City is no Mountain View - but it's still up and coming!!

Horrible service. My friends and I waited about 45 minutes to get our food. When we asked the waiter to check on it, he came back with our bill. Not sure why he would even think we'd pay the bill without the food, but this place was a complete waste of time and money.

Solid sushi restaurant, especially for Redwood City - MUCH better than anything offered in San Mateo. Recommend sitting at the sushi bar and chatting it up with David (they have cute pictures on the board behind the bar so you can tell who is who!). This is a good place for a date dinner and/or a group dinner with a few close friends (read: few as in 4-5, not 10).

This has to be one of my favorite sushi places (and I've eaten at a lot of sushi spots). They have the best rolls, but I have to say that the dish that sticks out to me is their Salmon Dill Salad. When I was working in that area, I had to have it at least once a week...

With all the great reviews of this place, I definitely wanted to try it. Boy, was I disappointed. The servers were both nice and they tried hard. I ordered the sashimi favorite that was supposed to include my favorite fish, hamachi. I also got the laura roll which had hamachi in it. Well guess what? They ran out of hamachi!!!!! Instead of owning up to it, the waiter tried to tell me that hamachi was too "typical" and that he tried to get sumthin special for me. I'm sorry but red snapper isnt special, its cheaper at pretty much any sushi restaurant. Just be honest, you know? The fish I did get wasn't even that particularly fresh or good. I don't care who owns it, but if this is the best they got in Redwood City, im very disappointed. Maybe I might have to go back to update my review if they do better.....

Never know if we're going to get decent service at this place but went there alot anyway for lunch since there were always sushi cravings and the food is pretty good for Redwood City. I like the Sun Roll and the Crunchy Roll is fun if you dont mind gaining a pound after eating it. Cool atmosphere, good for work lunches with coworkers if you have time to spare otherwise go early before 12pm and get faster service before the lunch rush. Have to say that the flat screen depicting various well taken photos of the food etc is a good idea and can help you pick something new, also they do have a decent selection of sake.

I have to write about this place b/c I have my very own roll here! Yes, lil old me has a roll and its called "Diana Special Roll". TRY IT! It has tempura flakes, unagi, salmon with their spicy mayo sauce. I haven't made it to the menu but its been on their "specials" board for a while now. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in RWC and one of my favs. They have great rolls and bento boxes for lunch. The service is also great and prompt especially during crazy lunch hour. Try it! You won't be disappointed!

This sushi simply is not worth the price. Their menu has the prices of a legitimate sit-down sushi restaurant (9 to 11 dollars for a house roll), but the sushi is no better than what you would find at a upscale gas station mini-mart. The second rate fish and fake crab meat, coupled with their liberal use of rice to compensate for a skimpy portion of the more expensive ingredients, results in an underwhelming experience that tastes like somebody used a 20 dollar bill (yours) to scrape the slime off the scales of a ripe Chinese-farmed catfish into a rice cooker that was turned on 3 days ago. This place wasn't bad when I first starting getting takeout there about 2 years ago. The wait staff was very friendly and would even give me a container of Siricha sauce to take with me. The food wasn't anything to call mom about, but the price was right and the portions were proper. Since then, the portions have shriveled, the prices have skyrocketed, and the staff is openly hostile to preparing takeout orders. More often then not, they will hang up on you before telling you how long to expect, your total cost, or goodbye. I have been several times where, despite my cordiality, they have remained completely silent with not so much as a hello or thank you. On the upside, at least I get the satisfaction of putting a huge cross through the tip line on the receipt while the bear over me watching me sign it. If you are in the mood for sushi, you are better off going down the street to Whole Foods. At least there the fish will be fresh, the staff will be nice, and you're already expecting to pay an arm and a leg for good food.

Ever since we moved west and left our favorite Sushi spots behind in NYC, we have been craving a high quality creative sushi spot. We have found restaurants that have 1 or 2 satisfactory rolls at various different sushi stops around the penninsula, but would quickly get bored with our regular selections. Then we found Suisha House. The sleek decor of dark wood and tempting rolls displayed on flat screen TVs instantly made my mouth water. We arrived on our first visit without a reservation and were at first concerned that the crowded foyer would hinder our ability to try the delicious looking fare. Luckily, two spots opened up at the sushi bar and we were able to grab seats quite quickly. I enjoy watching the sushi chefs and we could examine all the various dishes as they await their journey to their respective diners. We had trouble picking out rolls since so many looked attractive, but everything we ordered ended up being fantastic. I loved the ahi poke in particular which had just the right amount of kick and was topped with seaweed salad. The names of the rolls are not coming to me at the moment...but they were good too. It is true that it took quite a while to get our check at the end of the evening, but the owner was so kind and chatty that I couldn't hold it against her. Plus, the check came with a very cute orange boat....when you see it you will understand. All in all, we are pleased to find Suisha House, and although we have returned only once thus far we were reconized and greeted warly. We look forward to frequent visits in the future!

Hands down the BEST sushi I have eaten in Northern California! We like the food here so much we have been here as much as 4 times per week. Everyone there from the head chef and part owner Tonshi, Part owner Daisy, Sushi Chef John, as well as the other staff including Johnny absolutely ROCK!! We always sit at the bar and have either John or Tonshi make our food. Every time that we have been there the food keeps getting better and better. Tonshi is so cool that he has actually made 3 rolls and added them to the board for me. I highly recommend the Baked Crab Roll, Danny's Hanabe, and the "I Dare You". If you want to know what is in them you must go in and try. The Baked Crab Roll is not on the menu but if you know the inside scoop you can order one and taste how delicious this roll is...it melts in your mouth! The Spicy Tuna is the best I have had, the Albacore Sushi also melts as if it were cotton candy. Everything that Tonshi and John whip up is incredible! Not only is the food EXCELLENT but they treat you like family, and welcome you to their restaurant as if it were their home. Thanks Suisha House for taking awesome care of us.... Danny & Mandy.

Sushi house is amazing. I have been all over the west coast eating sushi and nothing yet has beating Sushi Houses' house rolls with not tobeko. Wow I love those. I love going here but dont go too often because of the price. I start off with some salad and a soup, then get the 2 item meal, which is quite reasonable, then the house roll to top it off. The house roll is amazing, but like i said the specialty rolls are too pricey. They range from 8-14 dollars a roll. Overall this is a great place especially for dates before going to the movies. Cant go wrong here.

I am looking at the last 5 reviews on Suisha House and I am amazed that the stars are so low. THIS PLACE IS GREAT. I have never had bad service here. The dinning area is ALWAYS clean. The food is consistently fresh and good....I even brought my girl friend there the other night and she call a few days later asking for the # to send her husband from Belmont to pick up a to-go order, she loved it too. I ordered sushi for a work event from Suisha House and everyone there raved about it.......good.well more sushi for me then. YAHOOO! P.S. try the Lion King Roll

Sushia House was great when it first opened. The atmosphere is very pleasant and relaxing and the food was great. I have been going here for almost a year now, and I have seen this place loose its fire since it first opened. The portions have gotten smaller and sometimes over cooked and the service has been terrible as well. We usually have to wait for 10 minutes before we can get our check so my BF usually goes up to the counter to try to pay and still has to wait! There use to be a great waitress that was so friendly and sweet who always acknowledge me and my family but recently I haven't seen her and have been disappointed with the overall service. I agree that the rolls are creative and fun and they have a large selection, I just wish they had better service and larger/better quality portions.

Excellent service, good food, reasonable prices. What else can you ask for??? I'm not sure about the difference in the prices for dinner. The two item combo at lunch is $8.25 while the same is $13.50 for dinner. How much larger can the dinner serving be??? I suspect that the owner is Chinese but that shouldn't make a difference if the food is good. I had saba shioyaki which was excellent. The fish was fresh and perfectly grilled. Our group had a number of rolls and poki as well. The only thing that was a slight disappointment was the teriyaki beef bowl. If nothing else, they should include a few broccoli flowerettes and maybe a slice or two of carrot to add some color. I'm big on presentation and slices of teriyaki beef on a bed of rice without anything else doesn't cut it for me. Just being a little picky but still. Anyway, there's plenty of parking, the restaurant is nicely laid out and they do an excellent job on the sushi. If you haven't tried Suisha, it is definitely worth the trip, particularly for lunch!

Suisha has decent pricing for the great quality of sushi and dishes they serve. It has become our RWC company's local "canteen" because our employees go to Sushia House so often. I only go here for lunch, but their lunch specials are good values. Every type of meat they make is good: Teriyaki Chicken is juicy, Tonkatsu is battered just right-- crispy, but not KFC crispy. The Saba is really well pan fried too. All their Maki's are good-- Crazy Spicy Rolls are really good. Suisha does a great job of making wasabi tobikio. My manager loves the salad dressing they have there. I get excellent service from the waitstaff, especially Daisy. Great environment, food and value, overall.

Once in a while I go to this place for lunch. Staffs are quite friendly, food is okay but it could be slow, like VERY slow. Nothing really special about this place but just that this is probably the only one on Broadway so I don't pretty much have a choice if I want Japanese for lunch.

Food is good, but service is UNACCEPTABLE. It's not so much that the staff is rude, although they're not particularly friendly, it's that they never have enough staff on any given night. I've been there several times for dinner, on pretty much every day of the week and weekend, and they are usually pretty busy, yet for some reason they are always short-staffed. Most likely a management problem, as staff does work hard and are incredibly busy and obviously don't have time to dilly-dally. You can wait at the door for a good 20 minutes before someone even ACKNOWLEDGES that you're there, and you can expect to be there for a couple of hours due to the extraordinarily slow service. Ambiance is nothing special. All in all, if you are in a hurry, DON'T GO HERE!!! If you don't mind waiting and waiting, food is certainly worth trying.

Decent sushi, a good variety of rolls. The fish wasn't as fresh as I've had at, say Kirala in Berkeley, but there were a lot of vegetarian options (for the husband) and I enjoyed my rainbow roll. The waitstaff were really nice, maybe too nice, since they kept asking to hold my babies (I'm a little paranoid). We ate outside (love the S. Bay summers) but the interior looked clean and stylish (i.e., flatscreen images of sushi rolls). I'll go again when I need a sushi fix . . .

Better sushi than most (definitely better than Barracuda's sushi conveyor belt). Maybe because we've been going for so long (before my 5 year old was born!) we've seen a progression from three stars to four. The service was slower on the clean up end, but has improved markedly. I sympathize with running a small business, you just never know when a landslide is going to hit and you'll need to staff up. The sushi is really good and is our go-to spot. They bring out the kids food fast too!

This place is awful! I am not a sushi expert, but I love it fresh and eat it often. I ordered about 5 rolls with a friend, and we ate 1 piece from each roll and they were all gross. We didn't complain, but they didn't ask why our food was hardly touched. There is something wrong with the rice they use - it's really salty. The ingredients also were not fresh; combine that with the salty rice and it is just terrible!! We had wanted to go to All Season sushi near the train station, but it is closed on Sundays. All Season Sushi is worlds better, and we went there to get our sushi fix the next night.

This is one of my favorite places to go for Sushi. Its the environment that attracts me towards the restaurant, even though I have to cross the bridge to get to it. Theres one roll inparticular that I really like, I think its called the Sunshine roll. My favorite roll. The service can be really slow though. In fact, most times I come here, Im not really satisfied with the service. Its a nice date place though I think, and theres a nice icecream/candy shop down the street.

I ordered too much food for Mr Q and I because everything looked so good. $3.35 for a bowl of edamame is a bit steep-most restaurants give you edamame. But deep fried shu mai? Yummers. They had 2 or 3 item combinations and the prices were reasonable. I also tried the crunchy roll and one with shitake mushrooms. Both were very good. I'd definitely come back.

the place is now called, suisha japanese bistro. they have superb selection of sushi rolls, appetizers and salads. their poki salad was very delicious, as well as their crunchy roll, fire dragon roll, spicy tuna roll. i like the way they use banana sauce on the crunchy roll as a sauce...very creative! service can be slow at times, but it's worth the wait for your food.

The food is decent, for a mid-week lunch place. They offer a variety of rolls, soups, meat dishes, etc. The service was always inconsistent and haphazard at best..As of today, I would classify it as Rude & Intolerable! Most people that work there are not very friendly and seem unhappy to be there..It takes about half hour to order and another half hour to get your food, which basically makes the trip a 2-hr lunch (if you're in an office environment, that might not be OK). Bottom line - if you know of a decent sushi place in the area, stick to it , this place is not worth the insults..

I averaged on a 3. For food I would give a 4 or 4.5 but for service a 2. My mother and I (both vegetarians) used to frequent this place about once every month or two. The food is delicious especially the agedashi tofu(minus bonito flakes), seaweed salad, Cats Eye Roll(shitake and avocado) and the veggie tempura roll. We love the food and this is why we used to eat here so frequently. However we have noticed that service has continually gotten worse. We once did dinner with about 6 or 7 people and people kept getting their foods at different times and two people would be done then two other people would get their food. Then one person's food came out after every single person was done and only after we asked them about it and they said it was on its way out(another 15 minutes later before they got it). Then one time my mother and I went to stop in for lunch. It is a very busy place which I think attests to the quality of food. However, we got there and there was a group in front of us that didn't get acknowledged by the staff for about 5 minutes and neither did we. After they were seated another 5-6 minutes passed and not a single server even acknowledged us to say they would seat us in a minute or even to just say hi and acknowledge us even though two tables had opened up since we came in. So we ended up leaving. We haven't been back since. I'm torn I really enjoy the food however I hate the service so undecided if we will go back or not.

Used to be a 4-5 star rating for us. Service and quality of food went downhill after they opened second restaurant. We gave them three chances to improve before we quit eating here. We missed them for a year. Decided to try again last week. Daisy (the owner) is back and the service has improved and the food quality appears to be back. I see mixed previous reviews. I hope the old Suisha House is back to stay. If so, we will keep coming back.

Fun place to go with a group of friends. I been twice and both times celebrating birthdays with a large crowd. The quality of the food is good but the service is aweful! At sushi restaurants I always order California Rolls with soy paper substituted for seaweed and I've never had a problem doing this. When I asked for the rolls, the waitress gave me a weird look and said they don't have any soy paper. Ok, whatever, I can accept that. It's not a common request and I assumed the waitress was telling the truth when she said they did not have any soy paper. At the end of the meal the same waitress brought out a plate of some sort of dessert rolls and they were wrapped in soy paper!! I was so mad that she lied to me. I won't go back unless a friend wants to go back for their bday or something. Not impressed. There are so many sushi restaurants in RWC and San Carlos that provide much better service!

The best sushi in RWC. Seems to have had a recent change in management, but the service, while always friendly and outgoing, is under-staffed. I was very disappointed with the service at Suisha House today. My first time there and I wasn't even acknowledged when I arrived. I made a reservation for 1 p.m. for 7 people, and when we arrived, we were not acknowledged. The place had several tables filled, and only two servers. They were under-staffed and busy. We arrived on time, and when neither one of the servers would give us eye contact, I approached one of the servers to let him know we had a reservation at 1 p.m. He just said o.k. and we waited, and waited, and waited. I got the attention of the other server and told him were were waiting for our table, and he said to wait a few more minutes. The server never apologized for the delay nor put much care to us. They were rude. Well, we waited, and waited again. We finally gave up and waved good-bye to one of the servers after waiting for almost 40 minutes and not getting seated with a reservation! We left disappointed and will never go there again. Instead, we went to the sushi place across the street and were extremely happy with the service, food abundance, and good sushi. I forgot the name of the place unfortunately.

I began going to this place since it opened. It has always served great sushi, but I do have to say that the service has gone down hill. A month ago the server did not greet us until 15 minutes after we were seated. I was there two weeks ago and the service was very good until we had to wait 30 minutes for our bill. I am a bit reluctant to go back.

This place is terrible. I hate disappointing sushi. Went here for dinner on a Friday night, and got a table right away. It wasn't very busy, but our our sushi was brought to our table so sporadically that the experience was terrible. The rolls were so unimpressive. A lot of rice, poorly wrapped so they fell apart, very little fish, and no flavor unless you drowned it in low-sodium soy sauce.
